First triumvirate

The First triumvirate is an political alliance gathering Jules César, Pompée and Crassus.

Protagonists

In -70, are elected consuls Crassus, richissime and made popular by its victory over Spartacus and its slaves (-74) and Pompée, which eliminated Sertorius in Spain. Jules César was announced as daring lawyer by attacking in justice a consul to his exit of exercise. César and Crassus place politically side of the Populares , opponents with the preserving senatorial aristocracy, and demagogs ambitious, while Pompée rests on the Optimates.

Pumped is covered glory in its campaigns against the Pirate S cilicians and against Mithridate VI between 67 and 63, while César is made elect in -63 under Pontifex maximus by a campaign financed by Crassus.

The triumvirate

The 1st triumvirate is concluded between these three ambitious in -60, secretly because the failure of the plot of Catilina in -63 is recent. Their agreement, valid for 5 years, has as a primary goal the election of Jules César to the consulate of -59, objective successful thanks to new in the electoral campaign financed by Crassus.

After its consulate, César obtains the proconsulat in Gaulle Narbonnese, Gaulle cisalpine and Illyrie. It starts the conquest of the hairy Gaulle as of -58.

In -56, the agreement is renewed, with this time like objective the election of Pumped and Crassus to a second consulate, and the prolongation of the mandate of César for Gaulle. Supported by the partisans of César, they are elected for the year -55, and make vote the prolongation of the mandate of César until 50. At the end of their magistrature, each one receives a proconsulat: Crassus in Syria, Pumped in Hispanie.

End of the triumvirate

But in -53, Crassus is beaten and killed by the Parthes. César and Pompée are scrambled then for the capacity: in -50, César at the end of the sound proconsulat refuses to release its legions, while the partisans of Pumped make obstacle to its candidature for a second consulate for -49. César beats Pompée with Pharsale in (- 48). This last flees towards the Egypt where he is assassinated before the arrival of César. César is named dictator but he is assassinated on March 15th -44.
