First epistle with the Corinthians

The First epistle with the Corinthians is a book of the New Testament.

It is sent by the apostle Paul to the church of Corinthe.

History

According to the Acts of the Apostles, CH. 18, v. 1-17, the apostle Paul is the founder of the church of Corinth. At the time of its second voyage missionary, it spends 18 months within this community.

It arrives of Athens where it on the occasion to discuss with the Greek philosophers with the Learned assembly (Acts of the CH Apostles. 16, v. 17-34). On the spot, it meets a Juif name of Aquilas and his Priscille wife. Paul is established on their premises. They work together because Priscille and Aquilas are also manufacturers of tents. Each Sabbat it goes to the synagog where it makes share with the Jews and the Greeks of his personal meeting with Jesus-Christ which is the Messiah.

A good part of the Juifs does not support this vision of the things and the fact knowledge hard with the apostle. Nevertheless, several people, and among them some Jewish, believe in this message of the Good news and are made baptize. It is the beginning of the church of Corinthe.

Context

Corinthe is an important city which counts at this time approximately 700.000 inhabitants. She knows a great prosperity thanks to the trade made possible by the presence of 2 ports. The cultural life and nun are in effervescence.

After having left the church which it has just founded, it learns, by people of Chloé, which there is problems in the community. He then undertakes to write to them.

The New Testament counts two written letters per Paul with the church of Corinth. Concerning the first epistle, it is not sure that she was written in once. The theologists are not all of agreement between them on the fact that there are one or more distinct letters.

Summary

Chapter 1 contains the greetings of Paul and a message of Thanksgivings.

Chapters 2 to 6 are the corrections that Paul brings to the errors of the saints of Corinth.

Chapters 7 to 11 contain its answers to certain questions.

Chapters 12 and 13 treat Amour and spiritual Dons (or “Charisme S”)

The chapter 14 draft of the hierarchy of the Charisme S for the common utility, in particular of the speech of languages and the interpretation of the Langue S

The chapter 15 draft of resurrection.

Chapter 16 contains its recommendation to remain firm in the Foi.
