First continental Congress
The First Congress continental was an assembly made up of delegated colonies of North America which meets in 1774 with Philadelphia. 55 representatives of 12 colonies out of 13 sat there. It was replaced thereafter by the Second continental Congress in May 1775.
Context
In 1774, the 13 English colonies of North America are opposed to their metropolis. London had indeed tried to impose taxation and to reinforce its influence of the colonists. In 1765, the colonists had already held an assembly called Stamp Act Congress in order to answer the Stamp Act. Eleven years later, it is a question of retorting with the Intolerable Acts inflicted at the town of Boston in reprisals with the disorders which shook the city. The First continental Congress was organized thanks to the committees of correspondence to Philadelphia, which was then the most populated city. It is precisely with the Carpenters' Hall that the first meeting was held on September 5th, 1774.
Convention
The Congress meets September 5th 1774 with the October 26th 1774. The assembly initially was chaired by Peyton Randolph then by Henry Middleton the last four days. The secretary was Charles Thomson, one of the leaders of the Fils of Freedom of Philadelphia. There were oppositions within this assembly: some delegated as Patrick Henry considered that the political rupture with England was committed and that had to be formed an independent government. Joseph Galloway delegated of Pennsylvania, sought as for him to reconcile the colonies and the metropolis ( Galloway' S Plan off Union ). He proposed the training of an American legislative assembly, whose assent would be necessary for the application of imperial measurements.
The continental Congress worked out off an outline of the Articles Association the October 20th 1774. These articles called with the boycott of the British products in the colonies with counted of December 1st, 1774. If the Intolerable Acts were not repealed, it was expected that American exports to England would be suspended starting from September 10th 1775
