First Sunday of Lent
The first Sunday of Lent is quite simply first Sunday of the Lent. It is also called the Sunday of Quadragésime (of the Latin quadragesimus , “fortieth”, from where Lent).
It is not accompanied by specific habits nor of rites other than those observed during all the duration of the Lent. First Sunday is regarded as the first step towards the purity sought by the Lent.
In the past, it was called the Sunday of the Torches or the Torches , according to a popular tradition which consisted to light fires, to dance with the entour and to traverse the streets and the campaigns while carrying lit torches or firebrands.
The liturgical station is done with Midsummer's Day of Lateran.
