First Republic (Ivory Coast)

The First Republic was born with the day before from independence from the Ivory Coast with the constitution of March 26th, 1959 (confirmed by that of 1960) and lived during three decades under a mode of Sole party in fact dominated by the Democratic party of Ivory Coast, section of the African democratic Gathering (PDCI-RDA). She knew a liberalization of the political life of the Ivory Coast before ending with the coup d'etat of December 24th, 1999.

Institution

After having answered favorably the referendum of self-determination organized in all the Franco-African and Malagasy community, the Ivory Coast, still French colony, proclaims the December 4th 1958, République. The Territorial Parliament of the Ivory Coast proclaims Constituent Assembly but it is only the March 26th 1959, which the first Constitution is adopted.

Political life

Absolute domination of the PDCI-RDA

The period covered by the First Republic is marked by a broad domination of the Democratic party of Ivory Coast, section of the African democratic Gathering (PDCI-RDA) and of its leader Felix Houphouët-Boigny.

Political disputes and their management

The political disputes born before the proclamation of Independence were solved by the Négociation and led to the fusion of the differences political clouts in the PDCI-RDA.

After the Independence, major contradictions whose in particular, the plot of the black cat in 1963, the events of Guébié in 1970 or the manifestations of the February 18th 1992, were severely repressed.

The coup d'etat of 1999

In a Political environment of tension acute, on December 24th, 1999, a coup d'etat carries the general Robert Guéï to the To be able. The National committee of public hello (CNSP) which seizes the power thus dissolves the principal institutions and puts an end to the Constitution.
