First Avenue

The First Avenue ( First Avenue ) is one of the avenues of Manhattan, with New York. It is located at the extreme is island, and constitutes the first of the eleven numbered avenues of Manhattan. It extends from Houston Street in the south in Willis Avenue Bridge in north, in the Bronx. Beyond Houston Street, the First Avenue becomes Allen Street, until Canal Street. Circulation on the First Avenue is done only in direction of north.

History

Following the example other NORTH-SOUTH main roads of the city, the first avenue was imagined at the time of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, which envisaged twelve avenues crossing Manhattan in the direction length.

Crossed districts

In the south, the First Avenue begins with the junction from Lower East Side and the East Village, then goes up towards Murray Hill. At the level of the 30e street is located an important medical complex made up of the Bellevue Hospital and medical college of the Université of New York. The First Avenue passes then in front of the Siège of the United Nations, between the 42 {{E}} and the 45e street, then under the Pont of Queensboro to the 59e street. On this level it crosses a relatively mixed part in its population of the easy district of Upper East Side, before returning in the Spanish Harlem after the 96e street and its district become Oporto-yankee after the periods of immigration of the Années 1950.

  • the Medical Center and the faculty of odontology of the University of New York.
  • P.S. 122, on the level of the 9th street, a theater directed towards various types of contemporary creations.

Anecdotes

  • Anton Dvorak lived on First Avenue, with the angle of the 17th street, of 1892 to 1895, and there composed its Symphonie of the new world in 1893. In spite of the protests, the building was replaced today by a social center.
  • the scene of opening of American film S.O.S. Phantoms II is located at the intersection of First Avenue and the 77e street.
