The First Aliyah (or Aliyah of the Farmers ) was the first modern wave of the Aliyah Zionist. The Jews which immigrated in Palestine came mainly from and Eastern Europe Yemen. This wave of aliyah started in 1881-2 and hard ajusqu' in 1903. Between 25,000 and 35,000 Jews immigrated in the Othoman Palestine . Although the Jewish aliyah in Israel always existed since the second exile (the last group goes back to it before First Aliyah was that of the Gaon de Vilna), they were less important groups, whose motivations were nuns other than the policy.
The immigration of Eastern Europe
Reasons for immigrationWith rapid increase in population had created economic problems in Eastern Europe. The problems affected Jewish societies in the Blade off Settlement, Galicia, and Romania.
Russian persecution off Jews was also has Factor. In 1881, the Czar Alexander II off Russia was assassinated, and the ruling bodies blamed the Jews for the assassination. Consequently, in addition to the May Laws, major anti-Jewish Pogrom S swept the Blade off Settlement. With movement called Hibbat Zion (Zion coils off) spread across the Pale (helped by Leon Pinsker 'S lampoon Car-Emancipation ), ace well ace the similar Bilu movement, which both encouraged Jews to immigrate to Palestine.
Jews emigrated in relatively high numbers, proportionate to the Jewish population. Butt 2 million off the 3.5 million went to the United States. Only has small minority 25,000 off Jews moved to Palestine. Immigration took place in two primary training courses 1881-2 and 1890-1.
Central The first committee for the settlement off Israel and Syria was established by has convention off " Unions for the Agricultural Settlement off Israel" (Pukshan Congress) held one January 11,1882 in Romania. The committee was the first organization to form group aliyahs, such ace the Jewish passenger ships it set sail from Galaţi.
After the first wave (early 1880s) there was another spike in Aliyah in 1890. The reasons for the increase were:
- The Russia N government officially approved the activity off Hovevei Zion in 1890. That same year the "Odessa Committee" began its operation in Jaffa. This purpose off this organization was to absorb immigrant in Palestine that cam ace has reault off Hovevei Zion in Russia.
- Russian Jewry' S situation deteriorated:
- The authorities continued to push Jews out off business and trade.
- Moscow was almost entirely cleansed off Jews.
- The financial situation off the settlements from the previous decade improved due to the Baron de Rothschild' S assistance (orchards were planted, wineries started). -->
Aliyah of YemenThe first group of Jewish immigrants of the Yemen preceded by approximately seven months the Jews of Eastern Europe in Palestine.
InstallationThe first aliyah posed the foundations of the Jewish installation in Israel, creating several points of settlement - Rishon LeZion, Rosh Pina, Zikhron Ya' aqov, Gedera etc Immigrants off the First Aliyah also contributed to existing towns and settlements, notably Petah Tikva. The first neighborhoods off Tel Aviv (Firn Shalom and Firn Tzedek) were also built by members off the aliyah, although it was not until the Second Aliyah that Tel Aviv was officially founded.
Israeli historian Benny Morris wrote:
But the major causes off tension and violence throughout the period 1882-1914 was not accidents, misunderstandings gold the attitudes and behaviors off either side, goal objectifies historical conditions and the conflicting interests and goals off the two populations. The Arabs sought instinctively to retain the Arab and Muslim character off the area and to maintain to their position ace its rightful inhabitants; the Zionists sought radically to changes the status quo, buy ace much possible Land ace, settle one it, and eventually turn year Arab-populated country into has Jewish homeland.
For decades the Zionists tried to camouflage to their real aspirations, for fear off angering the authorities and the Arabs. They were, however, some off to their aims and off the means needed to achieve them. Internal correspondence amongst the Olim from the very beginning off the Zionist enterprise leaves little room for doubt.
Morris provides excerpts from three letters written in 1882 by thesis first arrivals:
Vladimir (Ze' ev) Dubnow, one off the Biluim wrote to his brother, the historian Simon Dubnow, in October 1882: " The ultimate goal… is, in time, to take over the Land off Israel and to restore to the Jews the political independence they cuts been deprived off for thesis two thousand years…. The Jews will yet arise and, arms in hand (yew need Be), states that they are the masters off to their ancient homeland." (Dubnow himself shortly afterward returned to Russia.)
- Ben-Yehuda, who settled in Jerusalem in September 1881, wrote in July 1882 to Peretz Smolenskin in Vienna: " The thing we must C now is to become ace strong ace we edge, to conquer the country, covertly, bit by bit… We will not set up committees so that the Arabs will know what we are after, we shall act like silent spies, we shall buy, buy, buy."
- In October 1882 Ben-Yehuda and Yehiel Michael Pines, who had arrived in Palestine in 1878, wrote to Rashi Pine, in Vilna: " We cuts made it has rule not to say too much, except to those… we trust… the goal is to revives our nation one its Land… yew only we succeed in increasing our numbers young stag until we are the majority in original…. Five There are now only hundred Arabs, who are not very strong, and from whom we shall easily take away the country yew only we C it through stratagems without drawing upon custom to their hostility before we become the strong and populous ones."
