Firing squad

The firing squad is a Méthode of execution mainly used by the Armée S.

Unfolding

The condemned to dead is placed remotely gunners, but more distant actually than in the heroic representations of the cinema (see the Peinture Francisco Goya opposite, where the gunners are with less than five meters). The executants of the group are not Bourreau X professional, and are generally equipped with rifle S so as to kill more quickly.

Thus, according to the French military code, the group was to be made up of twelve men of different ranks, which they are military careers or called of the quota: 4 Sergeant S, 4 corporals and 4 troops. This one was to be ordered by a subaltern or a Sous-officier of the rank more raised, namely a Adjudant-chef. A fifth troop being indicated to bandage the eyes of condemned if this one wished it, and with a fifth sergeant returned the task to give it (or them) " blow of grâce".

In addition to the stringcourse on the eyes (or of a black hood on the head), a mark, with a chalk or a white handkerchief, is placed on the chest of the torture victim to indicate his Cœur, making it possible the group to better aim. It can also be attached to a post, to maintain it upright before and after the execution.

A Balle with white is in general placed in the weapon of one of the gunners, with for objective of less traumatiser the latter to have carried out a person. Thus, none the members of the group knows if it or not touched condemned.

With the signal, all the gunners draw at the same time.

According to the countries and the institutions, if condemned did not die instantaneously, a procedure was installation to complete condemned. As follows:

  • according to the code of military procedure American, as many salvos as necessary was drawn, this until dead
  • follows according to the code of French military procedure and by the decree of the October 25th 1974, a sergeant appointed for this purpose drew to it (or them) “death-blow”: a ball in the nape of the neck or behind the ear of condemned
.

Some exceptions of procedure

If the majority of the executions by shooting use the procedure described more or less above, there exist however some exceptions:

  • In Popular republic of China, condemned to dead put beforehand at knees, is carried out in public (generally in stages), a ball in the drawn nape of the neck with bearing end; the family of carried out must pay the ball which was used for the execution.

  • In Russia (and formerly in all the Soviet Union), condemned is him also carried out of a ball in the nape of the neck, in its cell, at the moment when it does not expect it.

  • In the Fascistic Italy , it was often of use to shoot condemned upright, the back turned to the group.
