Following the exhaustion of its resources, humanity gave up its native planet, the Earth, to colonize a new solar system. By Terraformation, tens of planets and hundreds of the moons were thus conditioned to accommodate colonies. The central planets gathered, forming the Alliance , whose capitals are Sihnon and Londinum. The external planets are they remained independent, at least until Alliance decides that the rules of civilization were to apply to all. A war devastator follows, which will last six long years.

Finally, at the time of the seat of Serenity Valley , the forces of Alliance, higher of number and well better trained, gain a decisive victory over the Indépendantistes . Among them, the sergeant Malcolm Reynolds. Mined by the defeat, this last decides to live in margin of the company, towards the outside worlds, where Alliance has yet only little, even not, of influence. It buys an old vessel, of class Firefly , which it baptizes Serenity .

With the assistance of Zoe Alleyne, her second, who during the war fought at his sides until the end, it engages a crew and starts to living odd jobs, more or less legal. Smuggling, transport of freight or charter, for the most important Reynolds are to continue to fly, to remain free. It is from now on all that counts.

Universe of Firefly

Earth

At the beginning of XXVIe Century, the America and the China dominate the Ground without however being enemy. Their influence is such as the Bouddhisme is the religion practiced by the majority. The English and the Chinese Mandarin are usually spoken by everyone. The majority of the swearwords during the episodes are known as in Mandarin. The population growing unceasingly, the resources of the Planet étiolant itself, the inhabitants of the Ground decide to fly away towards the stars. When a news star is located, around which a dozen Planets and a hundred the Moon S turn, one leaves in mass towards this Solar system. The écogenèse (terraformation) of forty new worlds is undertaken. The voyage was so long that a whole generation lived inside the spaceships.

A new world

The two first Planets with being terraformées are Londinium (for London, since at that time, England was annexed by the United States) and Sihnon (for Sino, or Chinese). Osiris follows, and the central planets were born. The life is good, the life expectancy is 120 years, the rate of Analphabétisme is of 6%. The prostitution does not exist any more, being replaced by the partners, women respected and very educated who, after their retirement, launch out successfully in Politique. Those which work in the houses of partners, who can be directed only by women, can be compared with the Geisha S.

On planets moved away, the life is less good. Some orthodoxe want to be insulated for political reasons or nuns. Others do not want to see the current of their lives traced by a central government. War S and Famine S occur. To correct the situation, the central planets decide to form the Alliance, governed by the Parlement and being able to exert its will by thanks to the military council. Believer whom the harmony lay in the Hégémonie, the war of unification was inevitable.

The freedom fighters and Alliance then clashes in the war more the devastator of the history of the Man. The planets Persephone, Shadow and Hera (where the battle of the Serenity valley to place) are the theater of wild combat. Shadow, where the young independence volunteer Malcolm Reynolds was born, is devastated five years after being itself joined to the " coats bruns" ( browncoats in English) (nickname given to the freedom fighters). After the defeat of " Serenity Valley" , Mal saw its demolished army, its destroyed world and its disappeared faith.

Comments

This series is a mixture of Space operated and of Western. After having received the script of the pilot for the new series, the leaders of Fox rejected it and asked Joss Whedon to write another of them. With only three days at his disposal, the author laid the episode " the attack of the train" who became thus the new pilot. The original pilot, " Serenity 1 and 2" , was finally diffused in any last. The higher order of the episodes is that which had been originally planned. It appears in the order wanted on the dvd. Who more is, the Fox did everything to lose his public, by changing the programming or by not diffusing straightforwardly three episodes. Good criticisms and the dedicated worship with Joss Whedon by its fans contributed to the decision of the studios Universal to widen the universe of Firefly. The sales in the form of DVD were sufficiently important to justify this decision. In September 2005 left the film Serenity , which takes again the characters and the universe of Firefly on what would have normally constituted the second season of the series. The film, whose receipts with the boxoffice almost equalized the budget, rejoined the critics and the fans in a unanimous way. A Comic-book was also published, filling the vacant hole left between the oddment and film. " Serenity: The official visual companion" accompany film and includes interviews, images, and script.

Anecdotes

Chinese spoken by the characters is the Mandarin, some times that practiced with Taiwan.

The Katakana is used when one sees something of writing (billboards, warnings, etc).

In the episode " The panne" , the automatic warning by the computer (in original version initially, in Chinese then) was to be in Mandarin. The actress who says the warning on the other hand uses the Cantonese.
