Finland Lakes

The Lac S of Finland are with the number of: 187888 of more than 0,05 Hectare S of which: 56000 of more than one hectare. The great majority of them is in the central part and Eastern country, known under the name of Région of the lakes.

Origin

The Lac S of Finland are very often connected between them by many rivers and thus form a lake and river network very complex. The great majority of these lakes has a glacial origin . Indeed, at the time of different the Glaciation S, with the icecaps covered the Northern Europe and in particular the Scandinavia of which Finland. These ices, by phenomena of glacial erosion, exposed and planed the granitic Craton of Scandinavia. The last icecap, installed at the time of the Glaciation of Würm finished it there has approximately 10000 years, deposited during its withdrawal of the glacial reliefs like Moraine S whose those of Salpausselkä and Suomenselkä, two final moraines located in the South of the country and directed of is in west.

These moraines block most of the time many the River of Finland, leaving only some breaches which they borrow to reach the sea. This aspect combined with the Relief relatively low and little marked country involves the formation of lakes upstream of these natural Barrage S. Other lakes on the other hand were born from a meteoritic impact (like the lake Lappajärvi) or are the result of an artificial stopping (like the lakes Lokka or Porttipahta). These lakes, with very cut out contours, also have very many island S, sometimes to several thousands in more the big lakes, formed by the eroded granitic base, glacial reliefs (Esker S in particular) and by the remainders of the old chains of Montagne called Tunturi S.
