Geography

Located in western edge of the Area of the lakes (the south is cut into two by the immense water mass of the lake Päijänne), the province is in an intermediate situation between the close provinces:

  • Plus relief and of lakes that in Ostrobotnie, but less than in Savonie or Karelia. Altitude lies between 78 and 250 Mr.
  • Plus forests and less fields cultivated than in the south, but less wooded than the Kainuu.
It thus marks a transition carefully when one goes from the south to north or the east to the west. The area comprises 7 border regions, the maximum in Finland with equality with the Päijät-Häme. In north, the Ostrobotnie-Power station and the Ostrobotnie of North. In the east the Savonie of North and Southern. In the west the Ostrobotnie of the South and the Pirkanmaa and in the south the Päijät-Häme.

History

This area superimposes practically the old northern branch of the historical province of the Häme (if one adds to it a fraction of the west of the Savonie). It was not the subject of a recutting in 1997, the area taking again the borders of Keski-Suomen lääni which existed since 1960.

Communes

30 municipalities compose the area, including 8 cities (in fat).
