Fingolfin

Fingolfin is a character of the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, which appears in Silmarillion .

Oldest son of Finwë and Indis and older brother of Finarfin, he is also the half-brother junior by Fëanor. He married Anairë; his/her children were Fingon, Turgon, Aredhel and Argon.

The name Fingolfin is the form sindarine of its name; with Valinor, it was called in quenya Nolofinwë (“wise Finwë”).

Fingolfin carried out the major part of the Noldor out of Aman until in Ground of the Medium, though regarding this choice as not very wise but refusing to give up its people with Fëanor, this last taking the boats of the Teleri. Fingolfin was that which carried out its people through the ice of the Helcaraxë, and a little later to the first rising of the Sun, it came, with Rochallor its horse, to the doors of Angband and struck there, but Morgoth remained hidden. Fingolfin and the Noldor went then to Northern bank of the lake Mithrim, from where Fëanoriens had been withdrawn.

His/her son Fingon saved Thangorodrim Maedhros, wire of Fëanor, which renonça then with becoming king of Noldor: Fingolfin thus became High-King of the Noldor. It then controlled the Noldor since Hithlum. After having gained the battle of Dagor Aglareb, Fingolfin maintained the Seat of Angband for nearly four hundred years. But the Seat finishes at the time of a sudden attack of Morgoth, the Dagor Bragollach, and many inhabitants of Beleriand had to flee. Panic was such in Beleriand that Fingolfin started to fear that all the efforts of the Elves are not reduced to nothing: it took then sinks it resolution to finish some with Morgoth.

Finally, Fingolfin only overlapped until Angband, and defied Morgoth in singular combat. Morgoth could not be concealed and Fingolfin faced most powerful of the Valar. After terrible and testing duel, not without to have wounded Morgoth not less than seven times with its sword Ringil, most valiant Fingolfin, “out of the princes elves”, was killed out of a blow of mass.

Thorondor, king of the Eagles, who had received Manwe Sulimo the mission of supervising the neighborhoods of Angband, emerges abruptly to save the body of the claws of Morgoth, which wanted to mutilate it. Thorondor then carried the corpse of the Large King of Noldor to the mountains surrounding Gondolin, the hidden city, and Turgon built a cairn on the remainders of his/her father.

The many wounds that Fingolfin inflicted with the Enemy Black did not cure or with difficulty; they always made suffer Morgoth, which was shaken by its duel against King Elfe. After that, never again Morgoth left its fortress of Angband, delegating the command of its armies to its lieutenants (in particular the Maia Sauron).

Fingon became High-King of the Noldor following his/her father.
