Finger

The fingers are the articulated ends of the Main S and the foot S of the Homme or certain animals. The presence of fingers characterizes the Clade Tétrapodes.

One also uses the word finger to indicate an minor amount.

Human fingers

The fingers of the Main at the human being are five:
  • the inch, essential with gripping;
  • the index, which shows;
  • the major , longest;
  • the annular , which in certain cultures carries the wedding ring;
  • the auricular , smallest.
They are numbered 1 to 5 on the basis of the inch, the fourth being for example the annular one.

The finger is composed of phalange S, generally three except the inch which has only two of them. The finger ends in a Ongle. The fingers of foot S are called Orteil S .

Biology

The order of creation of the fingers, during the development of the fetus is the following: annular, auricular, major, index and finally inch.

Symbolic system

  • To cross two fingers (in particular the index and the major one):

* can be intended to carry chance. I cross the fingers so that you arrive there.
* returns an oath null and void and without value.
  • To raise the major (Finger of honor):
* In France, this gesture means more or less mets you this finger where I think .
* In Quebec, this gesture means in the familiar language will shit! .

The gestural one of the fingers and the hands constitutes a true language. So much of gestures are universal, their significances on the other hand, is generally cultural.

A traditional punishment that one finds in many areas of the world (Europe, Asia, Africa) consists in striking the fingers: the inch, the index and the major one are joined together and receive the blows given by a rule, a flexible rod of wood or a bamboo. This type of punishment was in particular used in France by the teachers in first half of 20th century.

Expressions using the word finger

  • fingers in the nose : easily.
  • To be with two fingers of… : to be very close to a result.
  • To put the finger in the gears : to engage in a process or a step which presents risks of drift.
  • to put the finger in the eye (to the elbow) : to deceive themselves, be mistaken completely.

  • to roll the inches or " to turn the inches " : nothing to make.
  • To touch finger (the solution) : to approach the solution.
  • to lick the fingers : says itself of tasty mets (this Bouillabaisse is to be licked the fingers of them).
  • To put the finger above : to find the answer.
  • to leave the fingers the bottom (fam) : to put itself at work.
  • It is the finger of God : indicate the divine action (bible, exodus, 8,15).
  • " with doigter " : with tacte
