Final McIntyre Eight System

The McIntyre Final Eight System is a system of playoff including eight teams, which determines the two teams which will play the final. Two teams are eliminated per weekend. The teams which finish in top of the classification of the regular season can qualify themselves more easily for the final.

This system is used in NRL, since 1999. It was also used, until 2000, by AFL.

The advantage of this system is that it makes it possible to the two best teams of the regular season to be qualified more easily for the final than the other teams less better classified. Moreover, no match can be repeated twice on the three phases. On the other hand the principal criticism which one can make on this system is that the third and the fourth of the regular season can be made eliminate as of the first turn.

Operation

1st Turn (Week 1)

  • 1st Final Qualifying: 1st against 8th

  • 2nd Final Qualifying: 2nd against 7th
  • 3rd Final Qualifying: 3rd against 6th
  • 4th Final Qualifying: 4th against 5th

The two teams the least best classified which lose, are eliminated. Whereas the two teams best classified which gain, are qualified directly for the 3rd turn.

2nd Turn (week 2)

  • Semi 1st Final: The 4th team best placed having gained at the first turn against the 2nd team best classified having lost with the first turn

  • Semi 2nd Final: The 3rd team best placed having gained at the first turn against the 1st team best classified having lost with the first turn

The two teams which lose, are eliminated. The two teams which gain are qualified for the 3rd turn.

3rd Turn (week 3)

  • 1st Final Preliminary: the 2nd team best placed having gained at the first turn against the winner of the first half (Semi 1st Final)

  • 2nd Final Preliminary: the team best placed having gained at the first turn against the winner of the second half (Semi 2nd Final)

The two teams which gain their matches, are qualified for the Large Final one.

4th Turn (week 4)

  • Large Final: winner 1st Final Preliminary against winner 2nd Final Preliminary
