Final Fantasy XII

is a video game of role developed and published by Square Enix, left on PlayStation 2 the March 16th 2006 with the Japan. It was published in North America the October 31st 2006 by Square Enix, and in Europe in February 2007 by Ubisoft. Before its European exit, the play had been already sold with more than four million specimens in the rest of the world.

Final Fantasy XII is held in the imaginary Monde of Ivalice, where two powerful empires, Rozarria and Archadia, dispute the domination of the grounds. The play begins two years after Archadia annexed the small kingdom of Dalmasca. In this general context, the play concentrates on Vaan, a young adventurer dalmascan who joined the resistance movement of the Ashe princess against the empire archadien.

The play makes several innovations with the series of the Final Fantasy : the engagements are held on the screen of exploration without phase of transition; a system of “ gambits ” makes it possible to define in advance of the actions to carry out by the various following characters certain conditions; finally, a “grid of license” determines which competences and equipment are usable by the latter. Final Fantasy XII takes again also certain concepts and elements of the preceding shutters of the series, like the invocations of creatures, the Chocobo S or the flying vessels.

History of the development

Begun in 2002, the development of Final Fantasy XII extends on 4 years and fact from him the longest play from the series to be developed with Final Fantasy XI . The first official presentation of the play proceeded on November 19th, 2003 with Tokyo. At this time, the exit of the play was planned for the summer 2004. But little before the E3 2004, Final Fantasy XII was pushed back with an unspecified date, energy of the winter 2004 in spring 2005. Square Enix announces whereas the Japanese coming out date would be fixed during an event named Square Enix Party 2005 , being held July 30th and 31st with Tokyo.

The shortly after the Public garden Enix Party , the realizer and scenario writer Yasumi Matsuno, who spent several years on the project, its departure of the station of realizer announces to join that of supervisor. Hiroyuki Ito and Hiroshi Minagawa replaces it with the direction of the play. The official reason called upon by Square Enix is a disease.

Complete history

The history of Final Fantasy XII begins in the Royal City from Rabanastre, capital of the kingdom of Dalmasca, where one celebrates with an immense joy the marriage of the Ashe Princess, heiress of the throne of Dalmasca, with the Prince Rasler, heir to the throne of Nabradia. The jubilation is quickly stopped by the unexpected invasion of Dalmasca by the Empire of Archadia. In the war which follows, Nabradia and Dalmasca are not long in being invaded and annexed by Archadia. The war causes the innumerable dead ones, among which Prince Rasler. King de Dalmasca, Raminas, which is constrained to sign the capitulation of its kingdom, as for him is assassinated. The attempt at rescue of the King, orchestrated by the Dalmascans Knights fails when Basch, one of its more valorous members, assassinates Raminas like Reks, young a 17 year old soldier who accompanied the Knights. The treason of Basch, as well as the suicide of Ashe (since it disappeared) are announced by the Marquis Ondore.

Two years later, Vaan, the younger brother of Reks, infiltrates in the Palate of Rabanastre during the dinner organized in the honor of Vayne, which has just been appointed Consul of Dalmasca. It puts the hand on an invaluable stone, Magilithe of the Goddess. It makes the meeting of Balthier, a pirate of the sky and its Fran partner, which teach him the existence from the magilithes. Their escape of the palate turns badly when, into the Sewers of Garamsythe, they fall nez-à-nez with Amalia, the young woman who directs Resistance. But Vaan, Balthier and Fran are not long in being made capture by the Empire and are sent in the Keep of Nalbina to be imprisoned there. On the spot, they have become acquainted with Basch, imprisoned in this place for two years, which teaches them the existence from his/her twin brother, who is not other than Gabranth High-Judge. They finish by all escaping from these dungeons. Basch can then explain to Vaan why Gabranth took its place in order to exert a blackmail on the Marquis Ondore. Reks was only one awkward witness who had to be eliminated. Skeptic at the beginning, Vaan ends up believing it and helps it to join Bhujerba, with the assistance of Balthier and Fran. They learn thereafter disappearance from Penelo, removed by an bargain hunter, Ba' Gamnan, which uses it as soft food in order to capture Balthier. They meet a mysterious fore-mentioned boy Lamont, who is not other than the younger brother of Vayne, Larsa. The passage of Basch with Bhujerba creates movements, so that the heroes are captured by the Marquis and envoys on board the imperial vessel Léviathan, ordered by Ghis Judge. This one seizes Magilithe of the Goddess, who proves in fact being the Glare of the Twilight, in order to send it to Archadia.

On board Léviathan, the team is joined by Amalia, which is not other than the Ashe Princess; and Penelo, which was helped by Larsa. They manage to escape from the vessel and join Bhujerba in order to meet the Marquis Ondore, who is also the uncle de Ashe, but this one cannot prove its membership of the royal line, condition sine qua non to be likely to restore its kingdom. Guided by visions in which she sees her late husband, Prince Rasler, she is solved to leave to research the relics Raithwall, the King-Dynaste, in order to be able to prove his royal origins. The team thus leaves in direction the west and arrives at the Tomb of Raithwall, where the Glare of the Paddle rests, a magilithe with the special properties, since it is acted in fact of a divine nihilithe, manufactured of hand-same of the Gods. Ghis puts the hand on the Glare of the Paddle and tries to use it with its profit but causes the destruction of Léviathan and all the Eighth Imperial Fleet. The heroes however manage to escape from accuracy. The Glare of the Paddle from now on being emptied of any capacity, Ashe leaves on the councils Larsa to the meeting the Large Anastasis Pontiff, living with the Sanctuary of Bur-Omisace, so that this one recognizes it as Reine of Dalmasca and can allow the restoration of Dalmasca, which would make it possible to bring peace in Ivalice. The team with large complete gets under way. They meet Mjrn, the sister of Fran, which is had by an artificial nihilithe, and save the life to him.

The team learns soon that the war is not the wish of all in Ivalice. Larsa, which inquired into the bonds existing between Vayne and the nihilithes articifiels, contacted Al-Cid Margrace, an eminent member of the family imperial of Rozarria in order to lead them to make peace. Unfortunately, all these hopes of peace are swept with the sudden death of the Emperor Gramis d' Archadia, who would have been assassinated by a member of the imperial Senate, Gregoroth. On the councils of the Large Pontiff, Ashe leaves for the Temple Miliam where it puts the hand on the Sword of the Kings, a blade able to destroy the nihilithes. Whereas it obtains the sword, the Large Pontiff is assassinated by Judge Bergan and Larsa is repatriated in Archadia. The team runs up against Bergan, and after this combat leaves in direction Archadès, where is the Draklor Laboratory. Within this laboratory are manufactured the artificial nihilithes, fruits of the research carried out by Doctor Cid. On the spot, they meet Reddas, a pirate coming from Balfonheim Port. They are then confronted with Dr. Cid, who succeeds in escaping, but which however leaves indices behind him which carry out Ashe, Vaan, Balthier, Fran, Basch and Penelo with Gilvégane, the lost City in which Criste Solaire would be, source of the divine nihilithes. The team explores the lost City, but only Ashe arrives to recontrer in person Occuria, creators of Criste Solaire, who reveal the site of Criste Solaire to him and offer the Sword of the Pact to him, which makes it possible to cut new glares of nihilite divine. Ashe becomes thus " the agent" of Occuria, which exhaltent it to save Dalmasca and to be avenged for the Empire.

The extraordinary force of the Archadien Empire, carried out by Vayne, actually came from the research carried out on the nihilithes by Dr. Cid, under the influence of an heretic Occuria, Venat. Vayne thus seeks to become the new King-Dynaste by using the artificial nihilithes in order to become the Master of any Ivalice. Dr. Cid (Cidolfus Demen Bunansa), which proves to be the father of Balthier, became so to speak obsessed by the nihilithes and their capacities since his visit of Gilvégane and his meeting with Venat. The expansion of the Empire, which led to the destruction of Nabudis and the invasion of Dalmasca, was orchestrated in order to obtain and to study the royal relics - the divine nihilithes. One of these nihilithes was in Nabudis, it acted of the Glare of the Night. It was used by Zecht High-Judge, which caused the total destruction of the city. Gabranth arrives during this time at Gilvégane in order to make sure of the intentions of the princess, who he thinks of being quarrelsome. The indices given by Occurias as for the localization of Criste-Solar brings Ashe and his/her friends to the Headlight of Ridorana, with the assistance of Reddas. Ashe from now on is determined to destroy theSolar one and is demolished of Gabranth, which acknowledge to have assassinated his/her father, and of Cid, which before dying causes a reaction within theSolar one which starts to pack. Reddas, (which is in fact former Zecht High-Judge) corroded by the culpability to have caused the destruction of Nabudis, uses the Sword of the Kings on theSolar one, causing its destruction at the price of its own life.

Ashe then learns from the Al-Cid mouth that a war between Archadia and the Resistance, carried out by the Marquis Ondore, is about to be held: the battle field is not other than Rabanastre. Moreover, the Empire of Rozarria is personally implied in this business. Indeed, a skirmish took place in the airspace of Nabradia, opposing the Empire to an small group of Resistant, in fact made up soldiers of the Empire of Rozarria. This very unstable situation could lead to a generalized war. For the combat to come, the Empire made come Bahamut, immense flying fortress mouthful of the capacities coming from theSolar one. The flying fortress stations above Rabanastre. Ashe, Vaan, Penelo, Balthier, Fran and Basch succeed in infiltrating in Bahamut thanks to the assistance of Resistance. Basch finds his/her twin brother there, Gabranth, of sound vrain name Noah Fon Ronsenburg, which always dedicates to Basch an intense hatred, but which remains décontenancé by its honesty. The team meets also Vayne and Larsa, this last disapproves the methods employed by his/her brother. For the final combat, Larsa and Gabranth are combined in Ashe in order to overcome Vayne and Venat. The war finishes finally with a declaration pronounced by Ashe, enjoignant the belligerents to cease the hostilities. Larsa takes on its side the command of the Imperial Army. Bahamut, emptied of any capacity, threatens to be crushed on Rabanastre. Vaan, Penelo, Basch, Ashe and Larsa succeed in escaping. Balthier and Fran remain on board in order to repair the system of propulsion of the vessel, which makes it possible to avoid in Bahamut being crushed on the city. However, the contact is lost with them.

One year later, Ashe became Reine of Dalmasca. Its crowning is about to proceed. Basch replaced Gabranth as a High-Judge, honouring the last wish with his/her twin brother, becoming thus the guard of the new Emperor of Archadia, Larsa. Vaan became a pirate of the sky having his own vessel, accompanied by Penelo. It is learned that Balthier and Fran came to recover the Wake. They leave a message to Vaan including a word intended for the Ashe Queen like her alliance, that this one had given to Balthier before. The word is then transmitted to the Queen. Lastly, the play finishes on Vaan and Penelo, flying away on board their vessel in order to meet Balthier and Fran, which gave them go to Bervénia.

System of play

System of combat

The system of combat (called ADB, for Active Battle Dimension) of Final Fantasy XII upsets many traditions. The RPG kind evolves in a completely logical way to a suppression of the concrete limit between exploration and the combat (even if there is no shame to continue to employ this process, which can appear more practical). Even if it is online, FFXI proposes already a system of combat without transition, which offers a new experiment of play. It is thanks to the eleventh episode that it twelfth the way of freedom borrows, and thus offers to the players opportunity of living Final Fantasy with a new depth.

Thus, the player does not find himself any more on the Atlas, as since Final Fantasy X. He will distinguish two types of zones: inhabited areas, where he will discuss with the inhabitants, and the zones " sauvages" , where one can see evolving/moving the monsters. One is free to face them or to avoid them.

Not to have to choose permanently which action to make, as it was the case in the preceding plays, it exists a system of " gambits" : each character can free up to 12 sites to program the action to be made according to the circumstances, and this without the player intervening. With the result that in certain combat, the player can pose the lever and look at the fighting team killing the monster only!

As in the other episodes, each character can launch super-attacks, called here " Impulsion". Each character has 3 of them, of various levels, and the player can connect them in a combo devastator.

System of evolution

Final Fantasy XII proposes a system of evolution mixing Sphérier of Final Fantasy X with the matérias and the levels of Final Fantasy VII: whereas the characteristics of the characters depend on their levels of experiment, to kill a monster brings back points of licenses, which make it possible to thus buy licenses to be freed on the Grid of the licenses.
This grid is the same one for each character. It includes/understands the weapons, the parts of equipment, the accessories, the magics, the techniques, the no-claims bonus, the Impulses and Eons. The weapons, equipment and accessories can be in trunks. If not, they are bought near specialized merchants.

The world of Final Fantasy XII

Ivalice

Description of the world

Final Fantasy XII is held in a world called Ivalice (it is also about the name of the kingdom of Atkascha in Final Fantasy Tactics), at one time when " the magic was thing courante" and where " the vessels split the cieux". In these times, the magilithes, stones containing a mysterious magic force, are usually used, as well to throw fates as to make steal the vessels - one of the most snuffed means of transport of this world. Ivalice is divided into three continents: Ordalia , Valendia and Kerwon . Ordalia is located in the Western part of Ivalice. In the middle of the vast plains of this continent the Empire of Rozarria is, is continent as for him is covered with an immense desert, which is being a jagd . The jagds are grounds so rich in myste (the éthérée demonstration of the magilithes) that the vessels cannot fly over them. On the continent of Valendia the Empire of Archadia is, this empire is composed in majority of vast luxuriant plains. The continent of Kerwon extends to the south from Ivalice, and presents a more broken relief and a climate more varied than the other areas of this world. One finds there as well forests luxuriant as frozen places. In the middle of Ordalia and of Valendia is the Péninsule Galtéenne d' Ordalia . It is there that the small kingdom of Dalmasca is, point central of the history of the play. Of a climate rather moderated, Dalmasca is however surrounded by deserts, which makes it rather different from the cold extents of Kerwon and the flat rich person from Valendia and Ordalia. The typical location and strategic of the kingdom of Dalmasca placed it in the middle of the larval conflict opposing the two great empires of Rozarria and Archadia. So that two years before the beginning of the play, Dalmasca, like various nations of small size, is invaded by Archadia.

Influences

The developers state to be inspired Mediterranean countries to conceive graphics of the play. That is obvious from the architectural point of view when one sees the many cities of Ivalice as well as the races which populate them. The artistic team visited the Turkey, which influenced the choice of decorations inspired by the world Mediterranean. The developers also drew their inspiration from other sources, the such India or New York City. One can on this subject note the use of the Sanscrit in the city of Bhujerba (that relates to however only the anglophone version of the play): Svagatam (welcome) and Parijanah (guide) is words directly drawn from the Sanskrit. Hideo Minaba, developer and associated artistic realizer, affirm moreover that the team wished to add elements of Arab culture in the play, in order to give a more international dimension. The war is also a topic prevailing of the play and the developers affirmed to be inspired of the Rome Antique for the scenes of battle, in particular that presents in the introduction of the play. One spoke also much about a possible influence of the Star Wars on the play. Indeed, one finds many topics common to the play and the famous frankness: a cruel empire, a " méchant" hidden under an armor, rebels directed by a princess in escape, a pirate and his vessel accompanied by a not-human Co-team-member, etc… without speaking about kinematics which put in scene vessels and armies, and which evoke the saga inevitably George Lucas. Hideo Minaba affirms on this subject being a true fan of the Star Wars and declared in connection with this influence on Final Fantasy XII : " I am a large fan of Star Wars, I must admit it. But, if we affirm that Star Wars was the source of inspiration enabling us to create our play, with final it would not be straightforwardly more one FF, nor even FF12. I would say that I am right a fan. However, I would not say that inevitably influenced us ".

Éons

Éons are creatures déchues by the gods and being at various places of Ivalice. With each element (Fire, Ice, Heart, Ground, Water, the Lightning, Death, Poison, Meteor, Air, Gravity) corresponds a couple of éons opposite: luminous and obscure. For each of the two remaining elements, Light and Darkness, there exists one éon (Ultima and Zodiarche), the light being naturally the opposite of darkness. It would be thus logical that Ultima was created by the gods as being the opposite of Zodiarche. Moreover, each element is associated with the one of the twelve signs of the zodiac, plus the thirteenth one, Ophiuchus (the Serpent eater).

There thus exist actually 24 éons, those proposed in the play being the 13 éons obscure, which rebelled against the Gods. The 11 let us éons luminous are mentioned in the Bestiaire play. To be able to call upon a éon, it is first of all necessary to face it and overcome it, then to buy the license corresponding to the éon on the grid of the licenses. A éon can be controlled only by one character.

One distinguishes 3 levels from éons, the level corresponding to the number of loads of myste (symbolized in the play by small rounds oranges) necessary to call upon them. The level indicates also the power of the éon:

  • Level 1 : Bélias, Mateus, Adrammelech, Zaléra.
  • Level 2 : Shemhazai, Hashmal, Cúchulainn, Zéromus, Exodus.
  • Level 3 : Famfrit, Chaos, Ultima, Zodiarche.

Here a list of let us éons present in the play, with their localization, their sign zodiacal, the element, and their during luminous. This list distinguishes éons them obtained while following the scenario of the play, and let us éons them hidden, which is obtained only by the means of additional searches.

International version

A international Version of the play, entitled Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System インターナショナルゾディアックジョブシステム, '' Système of the trades of the Zodiac '', left on August 9th, 2007 to Japan, at the time of the 20th birthday of Final Fantasy and within the framework of the project Ivalice Alliance. The new one was announced on May 9th, 2007 in the Japanese magazine Shônen Jump, can before the Square Enix Party. This version proposes many innovations, whose principal one relates to the system of license: one counts from now on twelve different grids of license there, against only one in the basic play. Each grid corresponds to a trade (job) different, symbolizing the twelve signs of the zodiac, from where the name of the play. The checkerworks, whose form evokes the symbol associated with their sign zodiacal, prove smaller than in the play of origin, even if however several new license were added. Each character can thus evolve/move differently of the others.

Here the list of the twelve trades present in the play, presented like this: original Name (French translation), associated sign.

  • Archer (Archer), Sagittarius

  • Black Magus (Black Magus), Capricorn
  • Breaker (" Briseur"), Scorpion
  • Knight (Knight), Lion
  • Kikoushi (Machinist, Mechanic), Gemini
  • Monk (Monk), Virgin
  • Mononofu (Samurai), Aquarius.
  • Red Magus (Red Magus), Cancer
  • Shikari (Robber), Poisson
  • Time Magus (Temporal Magus), Balances
  • Uhlan (Piquier, Lancier, Dragon), Taureau
  • White Mage (White Magus), Bélier

One notes also some changes in the system of combat. The invited characters (Basch, Amalia, Larsa, Reddas) as well as the Eons are controllable in this new version. A new function was also added: while pressing on the L1 button the player can accelerate time. The treasures scattered throughout the play were also moved, and the level of difficulty of the play was re-examined with the fall. One notes also some modifications on the operation of certain fates (for example, the black magics of first level like Feu or Aéro touch from now on all the enemies, and either only one, Soin looks after all the characters, and either only one… etc). Some gambits was also added.

The play proposes also a novel mode of play, accessible to the screen-title. This mode resembles tournament where the player must face enemies (generally of the boss, even of the Eons) the ones after the others, through 100 successive levels. The player can use the characters coming from his own safeguards and use them in this novel mode. Obviously, more the player will have fought enemies, more they will be powerful.

The play proposes moreover the English voices with Japanese subtitles, the mode 16/9ème, as well as a disc no-claims bonus taking again that left to the the United States. Lastly, the last great innovation is the addition of the dialects specific to the ethnos groups of Ivalice (with the manner of Star Wars or the Seigneur of the Rings), which were envisaged in the original play but which was not finally established there. As it is the case for the near total of the international versions , no North-American or European exit is envisaged.
