Film gore

The gore is under cinematographic Genre cinema of horror, characterized by very explicit scenes of violence extreme (bloodsheds, members torn off, éviscérés bodies…) whose objective is to inspire a true dislike with the spectator.

Origin of the term

The orthography of the word gore such as we currently know it would go back to. Various etymologies of the word are proposed:
  • as former English gor indicates dirtiness
  • as former German gyre indicates the same thing
  • as former Icelandic gor indicates a viscous substance
  • as former Dutch goore designates seedy character, dead loss.
Historically and in several languages, the term “gore” is thus associated with something of dirty and of feeling reluctant. At the same time, this word indicates also poured blood, spread by the soldiers on the battle fields.

The first to be had creates the kind was the American writer Howard Philips Lovecraft in 1897.

Origins of the cinema gore

In the cinema, the gore is related to the kind created by American Herschell Gordon Lewis " The father off gore" in 1963 in the film Blood Feast. The producer of film, David F. Friedman defines in a letter sent to Jean-Claude Romer, then editor association of the magazine fantastic Midday-Midnight , Blood Feast like “first American film blood and gore ”. Herschell Gordon Lewis since is regarded rightly as the father of the cinema gore. As of the years 1970, the term is used to indicate this sub-genus of the cinema of horror. As from the years 1980, the term gore disappears from the Anglo-Saxon language to leave room to the splatters , but remains of topicality still today in the French-speaking language.

Characterization of the cinema gore

The gore is a kind of cinema of horror very basic in term of violence, and particularly explicit. It is characterized by unbounded bloodsheds: torn off members, éviscérés bodies… Nothing is suggested, all is shown.

One can distinguish two types of fims gore: films serious like the Last House on the left of Wes Craven and the films comedy like Evil Dead of Sam Raimi or the unclassable ones and mild nutters Bad Taste and Braindead of Peter Jackson.

The cinema gore is thus a subcategory of the cinema of horror. The scenes of horror are more explicit and aim to inspire a true dislike with the spectator. It is a question of inviting the spectator to think of the limits of the acceptable one. Besides one observes often an inversion of the roles in the films gore: the spectators can be indeed identified with the character who makes the atrocities because it is often about an human being as him (for example the Zombies which are above all the human beings in the films of George A. Romero, the victims which rebel and the monsters which are in fact of the human mutants in the remake of the hill has eyes by Alexandre Aja).

According to the Québécois Ethnologist Martine Roberge of the department of history of the University Laval with Quebec, the gore of films of horror (...) is a demonstration among so many others of ambient violence, as well in the fiction as in the true life . The films gore use an often mean scenario, a not very credible history, characters " typified with outrance" and much of blood. According to it, transcription symbolic system and allegorical of cruel feelings of films of horror has this of good (...) that they encourage us to reflect on our own intrigues. Taming our interior demons, they disturb us and fascinate us at the same time. They help us to regulate our conflicts and to pass through our own life, of which we are necessarily the heroes.

A great number of films can be classified gore in the Années 1970 and 1980. One can even regard this time as the golden age of the gore. The Italians dissociate themselves particularly with realizers such as, Lucio Fulci ( The beyond ), Ruggero Deodato ( Cannibal Holocaust ) and Umberto Lenzi ( Cannibal Ferox )

Some Masters of the cinema gore : Lucio Fulci, Jesus Free, Joe D' Amato, George A. Romero, Herschell Gordon Lewis.
