Film containing a film
This article relates to films of fiction - it thus excludes the Documentaire S - in which appear extracts of other films, realities or imaginary.
(NB: in each paragraph, the films are chronologically classified)
General information
It is frequent that a film presents film extracts. That can be a means of evoking facts passed quickly, for example when a character is itself an actor or took part in an event represented with the cinema.
The film inclusion in a film allows effects of flashback S, setting in context and can be used as well for shifted or comic effects (the character of the Rose crimson of Cairo which leaves the screen, that interpreted by Woody Allen in Zelig which is at the sides of celebrities of its time) as to create nostalgia. Thus when Fellini is shown in Intervista returning visit, with Marcello Mastroianni, with Anita Ekberg, the extract of the most famous scene of the Dolce vita , with the Fontaine of Trevi, interpreted formerly by the two actors mixes the homage and nostalgia in front of their ageing.
Images of current events make it possible to quickly draw up the context in which will be held the history of film: in Mad max II , the intrigue is preceded by the account accelerated by a world war related to the oil which locates from the start the account in a future world in ruin. This use of films in a film can be connected with an alternative of the Voice-over.
The scenario writer Jean-Luc Godard abundantly used of the quotation and the Mise in abyme in his films. In very an other style, the animated series Simpson refers many to films or series, each episode referring at least cinematographic (characters, scenes worships, music…).
