Filipino Air Force

The Filipino Air Force ( PhAF ) is the Air force Filipino , its official name in Filipino (Tagalog) is Hukbong Panghimpapawid ng Pilipinas .

Whereas it was most modern of the Southeast Asia in the Années 1960, the economic and political problems of the country makes that currently it is exceeded by the close forces but with a big role in the fight against the various antigovernment factions.

History

The origin of PhAF go back to January 1920 when, whereas Philippines were under domination of the the United States, Curtiss Airplane Company School off Aviation undertook the training of Filipino military pilots to the Claudio Camp, Paranaque, the south of Manila.

In 1936, an air body, the Filipino Army Air Body was creates within the Army Filipino.

At the end of 1941, it counted a dozen hunters Boeing P-26, two bombers Martin B-10 and about fifty Biplan S and planes utility and included/understood 2.132 soldiers ordered not 275 officers, mainly American.

After the Attack on Pearl Harbor, its modest means were destroys during the invasion by the Empire of Japan in 1942 at the beginning of the Campagnes of the Pacific.

This air body reconstituted after the release of the archipelago frees on July 1st, 1947 from the supervision of the Army, one year after the accession with the total independence of the archipelago.

The young air force was equipped with North American P-51D Mustang in 1949, they will be used against the Guerilla S communist and Islamic which shook already the country.

The first jets made their appearance with the arrival of the T-33 Thunderbird in August 1955, followed F-86F Saber in 1957. It entered the supersonic era in 1965, when it started to receive Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter. Philippines also used excel it hunter Vought Crusader F-8U starting from 1977 and were with the air and sea Frenchwoman one of the last countries to withdraw it active service in 1991.

Between 1965 and 1986, under the mode of Ferdinand Marcos, the country knew an economic recession such as the armed forces had to give up re-equipping itself. Thus, when it was reversed in February 1986, PhAF especially had materials adapted to the counter insurgency fight, but not cut to answer possible external threats which, fortunately, were not specified.

After the departure of Marcos, the rise to power of the communist insurrectionists and Moslem separatists of Moro the Islamic Face of release became an main issue for the Filipino army which had to devote the essence of its efforts to fight them.

In 1991, whereas USAF had to decide to evacuate the base of Clark AFB strongly damaged by the eruption of the volcano Pinatubo, the government of Manila refused to renew the agreement of 1947 authorizing the United States to use military bases in the country. Consequently, the defense of the country rested only on the national army, the monitoring and the control of the airspace being placed day at the following day under the responsibility of ten F-5 pertaining to 6th TFS.

Conscious of the gravity of the situation, the government of the president Fidel Ramos, elected in 1992, worked out a military law of programming over fifteen years aiming at modernizing the armies which was approved on December 19th, 1996.

On the 330 billion pesos Filipino, the major part was reserved for the acquisition of materials, namely for PhAF, of the new hunters, the Radar S, and the planes of maritime patrol. Unfortunately, the financial crisis which struck Asia in 1997 put an end to the dream Filipino aviators. Before the depreciation of the national currency, the parity was of 26 pesos for a US Dollar, after it was necessary to count 50 pesos, so that the budget envisaged with almost molten of half.

Moreover, it is the moment that the Communists chose to start again to appear, obliging the armed forces to join again with the fight antiguérilla. Modernization was thus done only according to the operational needs for internal security.

In parallel, the staff got busy to restructure the air force in order to make it more reactive. Thus the units were organized either according to geographical criteria, but according to their role, with the introduction of 5 great commands, of which one of reserve and one of logistical support, three others being in load of the training, the tactical operations and air defense. This last, to answer the wish of the ministry for the Defense which wished to stress security operations interior, however was brought back to the row of Escadre on March 31st, 2005, while the 5th Fighter Wing which was attached to him in front of the 5th Tactical Fighter Group.

Ten years after the launching of this program, the objectives are still far from to be reached, but in front of the resurgence of the Terrorisme and the guerilla, of the solutions nevertheless were found and the priority was given to the reconditioning apparatuses under cocoon.

Whereas in 2002, there was no more that one score of Hélicoptère S and some and drive transport aircraft in-flight status (the F-5 were nailed on the ground after the crash landing of the one of the last 8 specimens on May 2nd, 2001 before being striped registers on October 1st, 2005), forty aircraft were given in service.

Recognizing the important contribution of Philippines in the War against terrorism, the president of the United States George W. Bush their granted the statute of “major ally except NATO” to the month of October 2003.
