The Club the Mediterranean is a company of tourism and leisures.
History
The Mediterranean Club is created the April 27th 1950 in the form of a association law 1901, by a former member of the Belgian team of Water-polo, Gerard Blitz. The idea him comes from there following a visit which it returns to his sister (Didy) in 1949 to the Olympic club of Calvi, in Corsica.
It discovers a formula there combining camp-site, bar and sports activities, and adapts it to create the first village of the Club with Alcúdia (Majorque). It makes call for this first season with his sporting friends of pre-war period as with those of the Résistance with which it managed, on behalf of the Belgian government in a hotel Suisse, with Engelberg, the reintegration of the Belgian nationals returning of the concentration camps.
A ground is rented close to Palma, of the tents and of the material of kitchen (bought in a surplus of the American army confined in Germany) are conveyed by train in Spain. While receiving the first holiday makers, one invents, with the participation of the customers, a expensive idea with Gerard Blitz, who will be the base of the world success of the formula, namely to facilitate the meetings while abolishing, the time of the holidays, the barriers of the money (with the fixed price very included/understood), of the social classes (with social activities: sport, common table, life with the great outdoors) and of the religions. This in a “Greek” spirit which one can summarize by the formula “a healthy mind in a healthy body”.
Within sight of gained success, decision is made, at the request of the members of this first summer, to take back in larger the experiment. Additional material is necessary; the company Trigano and Fils, manufacturer of tents and material of camp-site, is contacted by Gerard Blitz in the person of the oldest son, Gilbert Trigano. In 1954, Gilbert Trigano returns to the Club, of which he will assume, a few years later, the head office jointly with Gerard Blitz. L will become about it, with the beginning of the year 1960, the general president-director.
In 1956, the Mediterranean Club opens its first village of winter to Leysin, in Suisse. The same year, the company imagines another innovation: the collar-bar. The GM, nice members, buy balls of color which are used to them as currency to pay their consumption with the bar. For more convenience, these pearls are threaded on a collar which each member carries around the neck. The collar disappears in 1994 with the profit from a notebook from bar functioning on the same principle. The following year, association dissolved and is replaced by a Public limit company. This one will be placed on the stock market in 1996.
The war of the Gulf, which bursts in 1991] weighs heavily on the activities of the group. The years which follow are one crisis period during which the Club must face important drops in number of visits.
In 1991, repurchase of the Club Aquarius founded by Lotfi Belhassine in 1979, including/understanding an airline company, Air Freedom.
In 1993, Gilbert Trigano leaves the group, and it is his/her Serge son who succeeds to him. In 1997, this last must resign. It is replaced at the post of general president-director by Philippe Bourguignon. The ambition of this one is then “to transform a company of vacation villages into a services company”. Its strategy proves to be paying and, in 2000, the turnover is in growth of 28 % compared to the previous year, and the bottom line of 51 %.
In 2001 takes place the repurchase of the Gymnase Club and the creation of the concept of the Oyyo clubs.
In 2002, it is Henri Giscard d'Estaing, wire of old the President of the French Republic Valery Giscard d'Estaing which becomes chairman of Club Med.
The Groupe Accor acquires in 2004, 28,9 % of the shares of Club Med and becomes the principal shareholder. This same year, Club Med announces its new strategy of rise in range and lance in 2005 a new campaign pub under the signature “It remains so much of world to be discovered”. Realized by Publicis, publicities of the Club concrete illustrations of this evolution want to be.
Club Med announced a return of the profits to semi-exercise in June 2005. Currently, the Club exploits a hundred villages in the world.
Since 2006, Club Med affirms the redeployment of its strategy and positioning luxates mark.
