Figurine

A figurine is a statuette of small size, representing human or an animal.

Among the figurines, one can quote folk arts, like the figurines of the Jiangsu in China, the Santon S, in France.

Today the art of the figurines is become again very popular in France, thanks to the representation in ''' articulated ''' characters of Cartoon, Cartoon collectionnables or playable Figurines.

The historical figurines as for them, which often represent soldiers, require a good knowledge of the uniforms (Uniformologie of the use of the figurinists), because the goal is to approach reality as much as possible. Certain amateurs spend much time to read works of History and to even carry out research (clubs, museums, files, reconstitutions life size of the most famous battles,…).

The figurines are also used in the Wargame S or the roleplays to represent the characters of the play, and their situation in the play. In these plays, they are often in Métal (alloy containing lead and of tin), sometimes out of plastic or resin, and from many impassioned spend much time to paint them with the hand. Some of them carve themselves (creation) or modify already existing figurines (transformation).

Once the Master Models (single part: English Master) created, it is possible to build moulds in an artisanal or industrial way, then to carry out pullings out of metal (or resin) of its figurines.

Apart from the plays, the figurines are also painted with an esthetic aim and/or of exposure.

Among the techniques of painting of figurines, there is in particular the Oil-base paint or with the Acrylique.

Then the photo meeting, or more exactly the Macrophotographie comes, with its characteristics.

Types of figurines

Classically, one distinguishes the figurines by their size (or scale) and by their " morphologie" .

Cut (or scale) figurines

The scale of a figurine is given in mm, this is why one speaks about size, which corresponds to the height of the foot to the eyes (example: for the 54 mm, the figurine measures 54 mm of the foot to the eyes, and corresponds to a character of 1,75 m on the scale 1/32ème) .

the most current sizes are:

  • 25 mm
  • 54 mm
  • 75 mm
  • 90 mm

the older sizes are:

  • 40 mm

the more important sizes (mainly employed for the busts) are:

  • 120 mm
  • 180 mm

These sizes should not be considered in a dogmatic way, because the figurine is before all the expression of a Art where each artist uses the size which is appropriate to him.

But for a Collection or the realization of Diorama, the choice of a scale is essential. In the same way a scale " standard" support the series production, while making the parts interchangeable, and allows the transformation of figurines.

The more important the size is, the more the details are fine. Whereas a small size makes it possible to carry out dioramas in reasonable volumes, but nothing prevents from making dioramas with figurines of 90 Misters.

The 54 mm is a good compromise between details and volume.

Morphology of the figurines

According to the way in which the figurine is carved, one will be able to distinguish various forms:
  • the figurine punt: the " Tin Flat " .

These figurines are in " quasi" 2D (thickness from 1 to 2 mm), and is run in tin (because of its physical properties: tin can twist without breaking). The tin dish is very popular in Germany.

The feeling of relief will be given by the Peinture.

  • the figurine " Round half of Bosse" :

It is an intermediate figurine between the Tin Dish and the figurine 3D. The subject presents a rather flat profile. This type of figurine becomes rare.
  • the figurine " Round of Bosse" or 3D:

It is currently the figurine in 3D, most widespread, where one seeks one made realistic.

Formerly digs (for questions of cost price, at one time when the labor cost little compared to the price of metal), one indicated them under the " term; lead creux". Requiring many handling, this type of figurine is manufactured only by some Artisan S.

Currently, the production of figurine is of " type; pleine" , easier to produce Industry it.

Various matters of manufacture

The figurines can be several materials.
  • metal (tin, lead, alloy)
  • plastic resin
  • paste of sculpture (milliput, green stuff…)
