Fights of Vizagapatam

The naval battle of Vizagapatam takes place the September 18th 1804, in the north of the Bay of Bengal.

It puts at the catches two Indiamen , Barnaby and Princess Charlotte , and their ship of escort, the Centurion , of 50 guns, with a small French squadron ordered by against admiral Linois and composed of a linership of 74 guns, the Marengo and of 2 frigates, Atalante , 40 guns, and Sémillante , 36 guns.

The English are with the anchor in bay, charging the two Indiamen .

The French arrive of south-west, raising the colors of the Royal Navy. The Barnaby takes refuge with more close to the coast, while the other ship remains with the anchor. The Centurion tries to fight the Marengo and the frigate Atalante . On the two sides, one is with the anchor with approximately one thousand of distance. After several hours of cannonade, the French move away.

In spite of the disproportion of the forces, the English will remain Masters of the ground, but will not be able to prevent the capture of the Princess Charlotte by the Sémillante .

For this combat, the Lind captain will be anobli.

The admiral Linois, in his report/ratio, will call upon “extraordinary” the armament of the Centurion and fear to see appearing two British linerships which he thought of being in trimmings.
