Fig of sea

The fig of sea or purple is a Ascidie Stolidobranche Comestible of the coasts of the the Mediterranean.

These animals do not have a Vertèbre S but their larvae present common features with the Vertébré S what led their classification among the Procordé S.

Other species of Microcosmus or Tunicier S make so much the recognition of Mr. sabatieri difficult the risks of error are large.

Biology and ecology

The fig of sea lives on rocks and of the dead shells. It is nourished by filtering sea water. Description: in the shape of large potato brown black (in addition to), covered with épibiotes (fixed organizations), from where its scientific name (Microcosmus " small monde"), with thick tegument and yellow flesh sharp, with an oral opening (siphon) with an end, and an anal opening in the middle of the body (marked siphons of 8 pink scratches), fixed at the substrate by the posterior part.

Use

All the species of Microcosmus are edible but it is mainly Mr. sabatieri which is marketed.

The fig of sea is also the name given to the species of the kind Carpobrotus , of the plants of the family of the Aizoaceae.
