Field of Grammont

The field of Grammont is an old wine property is of Montpellier, become since the years 1980 a space devoted to the spectacles and the sports.

Note: the alternative orthography Gramont is also employed. That with two m is used by the town hall of Montpellier and the community of agglomeration of Montpellier.

Localization

Grammont is located on left bank of the Lez, in the east of the communal territory of Montpellier, with the limit with the commune of Saint-Ells.

In the years 1980, the field is isolated from the city, surrounded mainly of Vigne S.

The initial service road is ensured by the secondary road D24 (which occurred Albert Einstein) connecting Montpellier to Mauguio. Quickly, with the town planning schemes of the east montpelliérain, is built the avenue Pierre Mendès-France which ensure a fast connection between Antigone and the exchanger of the highway A9 with the height of which the field of Grammont is.

In spite of the extension of the district of the Millenium dedicated to high technology and the creation of Odysseum dedicated to the trade and leisures, the field remains isolated from the urbanization thanks to the survival of several other wine fields, of which the “madnesses” of the castle of Flaugergues and Montaubérou in the west.

Activities and installations

Municipal activities

The castle in the center of the field saw its preserved and maintained gardens. It is used as city hall annex for the ceremonies of the civil weddings, the car park of the field being more easily accessible than those from the downtown area where the town hall is.

Vis-a-vis the difficulties of extension of the Saint-Lazare cemetery located at the North-East of the péricentre of Montpellier, was arranged the Saint-Etienne cemetery and was built a funerary complex in the east of the field.

Holy-Philothée vault

The vault of the field, called Holy-Philothée vault , is used currently with the exercise of the orthodoxe worship Christian of the Greek orthodoxe Métropole as France, left the orthodoxe Église of Constantinople.

Spectacles

Inaugurated on February 6th, 1986, the Southern Zenith is the floret of the field. First theater of the Zenith type built in province, it can accommodate 6.300 spectators out of 5.000 m ². In 2000, during a restoration, its fabric gray metal was replaced by a yellow fabric.

For the concerts and festivals attracting several thousands of people (rock'n'roll, techno, etc), Grammont Space is kept in waste land in the north of the field for this purpose. It replaces since the beginning of the years 1990 the site of the old stage of Richter which had this use since the middle of the years 1980.

A theater, located between the castle and Space rock'n'roll, accommodates the representations of the theater of the Thirteen Winds.

Sports activities

The western half of the field and some grounds in the east of the Southern Zenith are devoted to the sports:
  • sporting course in a wood of pines in north,
  • riding school,
  • track of automodelism,
  • tennis courts,
  • grounds of tennis shoe,
  • grounds bleaches on grass some for the practice of football mainly.

The Montpellier Herault Sport Club, club professional of Football, has its seat in the field. The team carries out her drives there whereas its stage, Mosson, is located at the western end of the city.
