The name would come from a transformation of the original name during the centuries, passing from " Hochfeld" (the high field) with " Vehfeld" (the field of the cattle), then in Champ of Fire (Francization of field of the " Veh").
It has also another etymological interpretation which leaves owing to the fact that the peasants called the mountain pastures according to the heights at which they were located: the name of " field of the feu" would come according to this interpretation from the translation into francic from the name from " Firstfeld" , equal to " field of fête" , therefore the field highest; to see the ville/le village of " Hohwald" very close (compared with " Höchstfeld" = " Firstfeld"). The name could also come owing to the fact that the production of charcoal involved an important release of smoke, letting think of the inhabitant of the valley which the top of this mountain was on fire.
A last theory which one can hear on the spot, known as that it was called formerly " Field of Fées".
