Since 2004, it is the official name of the championship organized by the OWRS (Open Wheel Racing Series), the organization which succeeded CART.

History

The creation of the Field Because goes back to the year 1979. Until this date, the major championship of American single-seater was organized by the USAC (United States Auto Club), which itself had succeeded AAA (American Automobile Association). However, since 1978, of deep divergences make their appearance between the USAC and the principal committed stables. These last then decide to create their own championship: CART (Championship Car Racing TEAM). In 1979, two championships thus will be organized in parallel: the CART and the USAC. But in spite of the allegiance with the USAC of the 500 Miles of Indianapolis and of the legendary pilot A.J. Foyt, the CART is essential easily, and becomes as from 1980, the single championship of single-seater of reference to the United States.

The CART thus will thrive during nearly 15 years, going even sometimes until making shade with the Formule 1 while being established apart from the United States. It should be noted that in reference to prestigious the 500 Miles of Indianapolis, the test headlight of the season, which joined the bosom of the CART in 1983, the cars of the CART then are commonly indicated under Indycar name. The official name of the championship will be even a time CART PPG IndyCar World Series.

But the golden age of the CART comes to a end in 1996, when the organizers of the Indianapolis 500 decide to withdraw their test of the CART and to create their own championship, the IRL (Indy Racing League). Even if initially this scission appears without consequence for the CART, the championship gradually will weaken, with the departure of several stables for the IRL (Ganassi, Penske, Kool Green,…). The CART will go until going bankrupt at the conclusion of the season 2003. It is then repurchased by owners of stables which rename it officially Champ Because World Series .

The cars are henceforth equipped with one limps semi-automatic with 7 reports/ratios (orders at the wheel by pallets).
  • the development on the side of aerodynamics is very limited, which makes it possible to keep a reasonable difference between the teams and to give a chance to all to make good performances. There are two sectors where the teams can work: the Shock absorber S and the Differential , they are Money with the pilots, in the race with the victories in ChampCar.
