Set up for the club of Football of Rotterdam (), Feijenoord , renamed then Feyenoord, the Feyenoord Stadion is inaugurated the March 27th 1937. The enclosure can accommodate 52 000 spectators. Called De Kuip (the basin, or the cauldron) by the fans of Feyenoord, this stage remains a long time largest of the Netherlands.
History
Construction
The project of stage is born in the Années 1930. It is made necessary by the popular passion and the first successes of the club, champion of the Netherlands in 1924 and 1928. President de Feyenoord, Leen van Zandvliet, entrusts the project to the Brinkman architects and Van de Vlugt, known to have built the factories Van Nelle of Rotterdam by employing materials emblematic of the modern architecture, steel, glass and the concrete.Of elliptic form, the stage comprises two stages of platforms offering a sight released on the adventure playground to the manner of the London stage of Highbury and its new western platform, dating from 1931, or the Yankee Stadium, stage of the team of Baseball of the New York Yankees, inaugurated in 1923. The elements carrying and the staircases access are rejettés in periphery of the enclosure, the upper floor of the platforms is built with a door with important forgery and, as to the Stadium Yankee, no post comes to block the sight of the spectators. This principle will be then included in many stages, like the Nou Camp of FC Barcelona, inaugurated in 1957. In the beginning only part of the platforms are covered. The Belgian team of Beerschot is invited to dispute the match of inauguration, which finishes on the score from 5 to 2 in favor of the local club, the first goal of the match being marked by Leen Vente.
Improvements and restorations
A lighting system made up of four masts is inaugurated at the time of the adverse match Feyenord and the Bolton Wanderers the November 27th 1957. Since the restoration having taken place in 1994 a new roof covers all the surface of the platforms, which comprise nothing any more but sitted places. An additional building, sheltering offices, the museum of the club and a restaurant, was built parallel to the side platform east coast (Maastribune). On this occasion the stage is officially renamed De Kuip .
