History

The club is created the July 19th 1908 by workmen of the wearing of Rotterdam. It is the May 5th 1912 which the club of Rotterdam adopts the name of Feijenoord after being successively called: Wilhelmina, H.F.C. (Hillesluise Combinatie Football) and Celeritas. The name Feijenoord was selected among three proposals, Mars, Het Zuiden ( the South , the Feijenoord district being located on the left (in the south) of the river) and Feijenoord. If the club so often changed name, it is that with each promotion in higher division, and thus with another statute, the league had already recorded a team bearing this name. In 1970, to differentiate the name from the club, and the district of Feijenoord, the Feijenoord internationalizes its name in Feyenoord .

On the European level, they reach their culminating point while becoming the first Dutch club to gain the Coupe of Europe of the clubs champions the May 6th 1970 with Milan against the Celtic Glasgow, victory obtained 2-1 following a goal in the prolongations of the attacker Ove Kindvall (which will finish better striker of the competition with eight achievements) and gains later a few months the intercontinental Coupe against the Estudiantes of Plata. Four years later, they will be essential in UEFA Cup against English of Tottenham.

On the other hand, starting from the Years 1980 and the arrival of a third club (able to compete with them and Ajax) of the name of PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord knows a bad patch only filled by some titles more spaced in time: the championship in 1984,1993 and 1999, and cuts it from the Netherlands to five recoveries in 26 years. On the European scene also, the club becomes less victorious, but in 2002, at the end of a campaign in UEFA Cup succeeded, they eliminated the PSV Eindhoven and the Inter Milan). They beat the German club then finally of the Borussia Dortmund 3-2 (thanks to one doubled of Pierre van Hooijdonk), finale which was disputed in their own stage De Kuip where they could count on their supporters.

The club of Feyenoord also had many problems involved in hooliganism during its history (see " part; Supporters")
