Festivals of the Madeleine

Each year take place in July the Fêtes of the Madeleine to Mount-with-Marsan, organized by the Committee Festivals of Mount of Marsan to which it common entrusts this mission.

Opening

the Madeleine traditionally begins the day before Saturday nearest to the July 14th provided that on July 14th is not Saturday, and finishes the next Thursday evening.

The Festivals are placed under the patronage of Sainte Marie-madeleine, of which the statue is carried in procession at the beginning of the church of the Madeleine before the handing-over of the keys, saturdays after midday. The ceremony of handing-over of the keys by the mayor, disguised for the occasion, with the young people of the city marks officially the beginning of the festivals. However the day before, into night, the Arènes of Plumaçon already saw being held the first spectacle of the Madeleine: traditional the Concours landais.

Events

Moment of user-friendliness, the festivals occur in the street, around the Bodega S of associations (clubs of sport, firemen, nurses etc) where the Festayre S, young people and less young people, are invited to meet around a meal or of a consumption offered to moderate tariffs. Animation is ensured by the Bandas, playing of the airs fokloric of South-west or besides.

Each year, the festivals are articulated around various strong moments, such as:

  • the cavalcade and its Corso of tanks prepared by the various districts and associations of the city and of some communes of the the Community of agglomeration ravelling Saturday evening and Sunday morning, without forgetting traditional the waders landais and to release Pigeons Sunday morning.

  • the many balls, organized with the four corners of the city
  • the free spectacles and sports events
  • animations for the children
  • the fun fair
  • the cultural exposures
  • the Corrida S
  • the Concours landais
  • the Portuguese Corrida
  • the Fireworks enclosing the festivities

The queen of the festivals and her two dauphine take part in all the strong moments of the festivals; for a few days one day has been especially dedicated to the children: the " Heste dous Pitchouns" ; it is placed under the presidency of a " minis reine" who, as from 2007, will be accompanied by a " minis roi".

Colors

Since the beginning of the Years 2000, Mount-of-Marsan chose a behavior in blue and white, pointing out the colors of its blazon and thus dissociating it other cities gascones and Basque, which prefer the red and white, copied Fêtes of San Fermín to Pampelune.

Bullfighting

The tauromachic tradition of the city gascone goes back to the 17th century. The first Corrida S were held then on the Saint-Roch place, whose exits were barred for the occasion. This use remained until the end of the 19th century, but one day these wood arenas burned and the city decided a permanent structure on a site called Plumaçon: the name was going to remain. It is starting from 1889 that the bullfights are organized in the Arène S of Plumaçon, built same the years then renovated and increased in 1933.

These arenas attract each year the Aficionado S for five bullfights, two Novillada S (pricked and not pricked), making of it an appointment impossible to circumvent of the Tauromachie and offers in addition traditional the Course landaise in the form of Concours landais and a Portuguese Corrida with horse. Finally these last years an additional formula was installation: the Race of the futures taurins, a mixed spectacle which gives their chance to beginners of the two forms of Tauromachie, the landaise and Spanish.

The bullfights are preceded by the increase by the main street by the city in direction by the arenas by the Alguazil with horse and the train by Arrastre.
