Festival of Angouleme 2005

The 32e international festival of the cartoon of Angouleme took place of the 27 to the January 30th 2005.

A booklet especially created by the Festival in order to more on the 42 albums in competition this year was placed free at the disposal on the official site. Prize list

The prize list of the edition 2005 of the International festival of the cartoon of Angouleme is indicated below. It is composed of 10 official prices and other prices not forming part of the festival but which were given during this one. The winner of the price is mentioned in fat, followed by the nominated albums.

Grand Prix of the town of Angouleme

The Grand Prix of the Town of Angouleme was given to Georges Wolinski, illustrator of political press, and author of cartoons, collaborator in particular of store Hara-Kiri and Charlie Hebdo. George Wolinski, as an editor association of Monthly Charlie, contributed to make known with the French public of the authors such as Harvey Kurtzman (Mad), Guido Crepax (Valentina) or Charles Schulz (Peanuts).

Course of the festival

Polemic around the nominated ones

In a letter addressed to Benoit Mouchart (director artistic), Jean-Marc Thévenet and Thierry Bellefroid, the author Joann Sfar reproach with the latter an inappropriate selection of albums, composed mainly of American or Japanese albums left there are ten or sometimes twenty years, choice which would imply that the Franco-Belgian field does not produce anything any more good and that the only good cartoons published recently are in fact of old works. Several articles on this subject were published on the ActuaBD site in December 2005.

Official

official Presence of Jean-François Lamour, Minister for Youth, the Sports and Community life, the January 27th. In an interview this one known as set on comic strips and explains its presence with double-title: the fact that it represents youth on the one hand and the relationship between sport and cartoon on the other hand.
Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, Minister for the Culture and Transport was present Friday January 28th to give the chivalric insignias of Arts and Lettres to Art Spiegelman. The minister has in the marked his taste for the cartoon “Mode of expression and of exceptional intelligence, art with whole share and average passing to make discover the reading” . He announced his wish to support the cartoon from any point of view and also of “to do everything to consolidate the role of Angouleme like world capital of the cartoon” ".

People

The troop of the Star Academy and groups it L5 presented the albums of cartoon which are devoted to them.

Spectacles

Concert of drawings: on an idea of Zep and Benoit Mouchart, draftsmen put in image, public and with musical accompaniment, the scenario that prepared to them José-Louis Bocquet and Thierry Smolderen. Draftsmen: Zep, Nicolas de Crécy, Philippe Dupuy and Charles Berberian, Johan De Moor, Jean-Christophe Chauzy, Blutch, O' Groj, Stan and Vince. The music is composed by Areski Belkacem. Three meetings, January 27th, 28th and 29th. It is an immense public success: the last representation, with the theater, joins together a public of more than 700 people while 3000 people are driven back, for lack of place.

the Japanese author Hiroyuki Takei was made citizen of honor of the town of Angouleme.
Presence of Art Spiegelman, decorated by the minister with the Culture (see higher), whose speech of circumstance was felt as very moving by those which assisted to with it.
the frequentation of the living room was, according to its organizers, of 200.000 people, that is to say more the historical high level of the demonstration.

Jury

As the tradition wants it, the jury of the 32e Festival of Angouleme was chaired by Zep, Grand Prix in 2004. The other members were Antoine Duplan, Christophe Ono-Known as-Biot, Serge Tisseron, ARIANE Valadié, Monique Younès and Martin Winckler. The preselection was ensured by Benoît Mouchart, Jean-Marc Thévenet and Thierry Bellefroid (cf the section “course of the festival”)

The Selection committee is also composed of Olivier Jalabert, Nicolas Finet, José-Louis Bocquet and Julien Bastide.
