Ferrovie dello Stato

The FS or Ferrovie dello Stato , state railways, are operating domestic network of the railroads Italian . It is a state enterprise, whose statute is that of a Public limit company by actions, and whose capital is held entirely by the Italian State.

The FS are organized as a group whose principal subsidiary companies are:

  • Trenitalia, it is the Railway company charged to exploit the services of Transport of goods and travellers,
  • RFI or Rete ferroviaria italiana, it is the manager Italian national rail network,
  • Grandi Stazioni (large stations), it is the manager of the 13 larger Italian stations,
  • Italferr, it is a company of engineering railway,
  • Sogin, it is the company which manages the road services complementary travellers.

The Italian rail network includes/understands 16.178 km of lines with normal spacing, including 10.688 electrified in D.C. current 3000 V.

Traffic carried out by Trenitalia (figures 2002):

  • Travellers: 492 million travellers (+ 4,2% compared to 2001); 46,7 billion traveller-km (+ 0,2%);
  • freight: 73,6 million tons (- 5.1%); 20,4 billion tkm.

Manpower: 100.000 paid.

Park of rolling stock:

  • locomotive: 4.500,
  • cars passengers: 10.000,
  • freight cars: 50.000.
