Ferrovia Genova Casella

The company Ferrovia Genova Casella ( FGC ) is small a Railway company Italy which exploits the connection Genoa - Casella, locality apart 25 kilometers in the back-country of the ligure chief town. Exploiting eleven pairs of trains per day, it transports approximately 250  000 travellers per annum.

The line

The electrified line with Narrow gauge railway (metric spacing), completely electrified in D.C. current with 2400 V (tension raised thereafter to 3000 V - standard FS) and steeply sloping, was brought into service in 1929. It leaves the station of Genoa Piazza Manin and follows a completely mountainous course which crosses three different valleys: Valbisagno, Valpolcevera and Valle Scrivia. It also touches in a marginal way the Val Trebbia. The slopes maximum reach 45 per thousand.

The profile longitudinally is the following: on the basis of the altitude of 93 meters in station of Genoa-piazza Manin, one passes in nine kilometers to 364 meters in the locality of Trensasco, to reach 410 meters with the terminus of Casella-Paese after having crossed the watershed of Crocetta d' Orero, with 458 meters, culminating point of the line. To the three quarters of the course approximately, the line crosses the commune of Sant' Olcese.

Management

Since 1949 under the mode of governmental management “commissariale” under the aegis of the ministry for Transport, it is managed since 2002 by a company controlled by the area of Ligurie. It is one of the rare railway lines in exclusive right of way which was not included/understood in the unification of the network occurred during the XXe century (in particular in the the Sixties).
The reason of its maintenance is due mainly to the absence of alternative connection to connect Genoa to Casella.

There exist projects of prolongation of the line from the station of Genoa-piazza Manin - not far from the Castello Mackenzie - until the Gare of Genoa-Brignole.

Also being studied a lengthening of the course is which interests the district of Begato, with the top of Rivarolo, so as to connect - as a kind of light subway which supplements current the Métro of Genoa - the Western district with the center town.

Subject to reservation, it is possible to charter whole convoys for marriages or the transport of bicycles, like for important groups.

The layout skirts - on the slope of the Val Bisagno - the line of fortifications which belongs to the Eastern group of the strong and the Murailles of Genoa of medieval time.

During the last war, the line was very much used by the many population génoise folded up in the localities of the back-country because of the bombardments which touched the city.
