Fernando Póo

The Navigator

Fernando Póo (is written also Fernão C Pó , Fernão Pó , Fernando Pó ) was a navigator and an explorer Portuguese. He recognized the west coast African.

In 1472, he is the first European to discover the island of Bioko (Guinea Equatoriale) (see below).

He also recognized the estuary of the Wouri to the Cameroun which he would have called “  Rio back Camaroes  ” (the river of shrimps) which will give the name Cameroun.

The island

The island of Bioko, which belongs to the Guinea Equatoriale, was called island Fernando Póo or Fernando Pó in 1492, of the name of its discoverer.

It was famous Bioko in 1979.
