Fernanda Fernández

Sister Fernanda Fernández was a Spanish nun whose memory remained because of the fact that it was the first known example of Intersexualité in Spain.

Its life

It is known for us thanks to a cuban doctor, Dr. Tómas Romay Chacón which published this history in 1813.

Born in 1755 in Zújar, a village of the abbey of Baza, évêché of Guadiz, Fernanda Fernández was educated by honest and Christian parents. As it had the most pious inclinations, it took the dress of nun nasturtium in a monastery of Grenade on April 10th 1774, at the 18 years age, and pronounced its wishes.

As of its youth, she had noticed that when she sneezed, coughed, or made some abnormal effort, it was detached among the lips from its sex a fleshy body from an inch length or a little more and that it again quickly hid without him to cause troubles. Its decency did not enable him to think of this phenomenon, at least did not speak about it with its colleagues. It was thus until it had 32 years, moment from which it started to feel inclinations towards the fair sex, of the frequent emissions of this foreign body and of the involuntary impulses.

It then informed its confessor of the new feelings and the new movements which it noticed, by begging it that he drew it from this monastery where she judged not to have to remain, since she belonged to the other sex. But this director, and the others which it had during the five years which followed, did not pay attention to its request, allotting to crises of Hystérie carnal stimulations which it felt, and with a relaxation of the uterus or vagina the foreign body which was presented in it. Finally its last confessor, father Esteban Garrido, as soon as it was informed of what arrived to him, after having reflected attentively and having consulted the best theologists and the best scientists, asked higher monastery to separate Fernanda sister from the other nuns and to keep it under key, until the decision of the archbishop, gift Juan Manuel Moscoso there Peralta.

Informed by the Garrido father, this prelate inserted in the monastery a Sage-femme, to visit the nun and to submit his report/ratio. The examination was practiced, and the midwife certified that the examined person was well a man. Sœur Fernanda thus was withdrawn from the monastery on January 21st 1792 under a laic costume of woman. Installed in a sure place, she was again visited by two doctors, two surgeons and a midwife, which, unanimously, attested to have found at the person examined inter alia characteristics those which follow:

We discovered under the hypogastric area two lips joined together in their upper part at the mons veneris, and their lower part with périnée, forming the rima mayor. If one separates the lips one neither nymphs nor Clitoris finds; but at the place that this one should occupy, is the urinary canal functional. Two “lines” more low us have not found opening external of Vagina but with place Penis perfect with its nipple delimited in upper part by line membranous, which circumscribed it, and which ended in the Urètre from which each month left, since 14 to 15 years, an minor amount of blood, the same conduit also expelling a seminal liquid, when the examined person was prone to an erection or a venereal stimulation. The Pénis was deprived of foreskin; at the time of the observation, it had an inch and half length, and, in erection, could reach three inches. At the base of this member two round collateral projections in form of Testicules, covered were consequently skin which internally covers the fleshy parts of the lips.

In conclusion the doctors affirmed unanimously that the principal bodies which prevailed at this person were those of the male sex: it was thus to be regarded as a true man and to adopt the costume which corresponded to him. Being based on this opinion the prelate cancelled the religious profession of Fernanda sister, made it get dressed as a man and, on February 11th 1792, dispatched it in his/her parents at the village of Zújar. All the procedure is preserved at the ecclesiastical curia of Grenade.

The remainder of the biography of the Fernanda ex-sister is not known. One is unaware of also the exact date of his death but it is known that it had not reached about sixty.
