History

The accelerator
Stages of acceleration:The first stage of acceleration has place in the generator or multiplior of Cockcroft-Walton. The hydrogen gas is transformed into H- ions by its introduction into a container filled with Césium. A magnetic field is applied to the generator which tears off the ions of the container.
The following stage is the linear accelerator or Linac sui accelerates the particle with 70% speed of light, that is to say an energy of 400 MeV. Right before penetrating in the following accelerator, the ions cross a carbon foil and become protons, H+.
The following stage is the circle booster rocket, a circular accelerator which uses magnets. The beams of protons are involved in a circular trajectory that they traverse 20000 times, and thus increase their energy with each turn. They leave this phase then and enter the principal injector with an energy of 8 GeV, last bond in acceleration before the 6.4 km long Tevatron. The principal injector also makes it possible to provide protons to the sources of Antiproton, and to decelerate the protons and the antiprotons.
Future
Tevatron is today with these superconductive magnets the most powerful particle accelerator in the world, although it will lose its statute of larger accelerator in the world with the profit of the Broad Hadronic Collider located at CERN with Geneva (Suisse).
