Spain

The word feria indicates in Castillan in the beginning a Foire (agricultural, book,…). The bullfights being often given at the time of the agricultural fairs, the Castillan came from there to indicate by the term of feria, a cycle of Corrida S organized on this occasion, and often - especially in Andalusia - the festivities which accompany these bullfights. In many Spanish areas, one still distinguishes nevertheless the festivals and the feria which is held on this occasion. Thus, with Pampelune, one differentiates the festivals from San Fermín ( Fiestas de San Fermín or Sanfermines ) of the Feria del Toro , which indicates the cycle of eight bullfights, a Novillada and a bullfight with horse proposed for the Festivals. At all events, of the Festivals without bullfight cannot in no case to be described as ferias . The word continues to be employed in Spain exactly with the same direction as French " foire". It is enough to see the " calendarios of ferias" of all the provinces of Spain whose majority comprise bullfights by no means. For example popular the " Almanaque Zaragozano" read in whole Spain this list of " gives; Ferias" in which there is " corrida".

France

In France, the word was often used to name a cycle of bullfights. South-east, more hispanisant, very quickly confused feria taurine and celebrates. The Gascon cities followed this movement since about thirty years. Thus, the Festivals of Dax, in the Moors, officially became the feria of Dax, thus breaking with the popular tradition. The popularity of these festivals and the mediatization which was made by it supported the substitution of the word festivals by that of feria. Many communes - including those which do not organize any bullfight - thus renamed their employers' festivities, ferias. And the everyday usage followed. However, with Mount-with-Marsan as with Bayonne, the estival festive week continues to be respectively entitled Fêtes of the Madeleine and Fêtes of Bayonne.
