Ferdinand II of León

Ferdinand II of Castille , born in 1137, died in Benavente the January 22nd 1188, was king de Léon of 1157 with 1188. It was wire of Alphonse VII, king de Castille and of Leon, and Berengere of Barcelona.

It succeeded his father in 1157, while his/her brother Sanche III inherited Castille. It was distinguished during a 30 years reign by its prudence, its value and its affability. Regent in Castille, after the death of Sanche III of Castille, during the minority of Alphonse VIII, his nephew, it alleviated the disorders that there had caused the competition of the Castro and of the Lara.

He removed with the Moor S several important places, moved back the limits of his States, and died in 1188, at the moment when he prepared with a crusade. It is of its reign that date the military order of Saint-Jacob, intended for the defense of the fields of the Chrétiens.

Marriages and children

He had married in May 1165 Urraque of Portugal (1151 † 1188), girl of Alphonse Ier, king de Portugal and of Mathilde of Savoy. They had:
  • Alphonse IX (1171 † 1230), king de Léon

He remaria before 1178 with Therese († 1180), girl of Ferdinand de Trava, lord of Trastamare, and Sanha Gonzalez, and had:

  • Ferdinand (1180 † 1187)
  • It took then as mistress Urraque Lopez de Haro, girl of the count Loup Diaz de Haro and Aldonza Ruiz, which it married in May 1187. They had had:

  • Garcia Fernandez, born towards 1182 before the marriage of his/her parents, and died in 1184
  • Sanche (1188 † 1220), lord of Monteagudo and Aguilar
