Fencing in wheel chair
The fencing in wheel chair is a sporting discipline paralympic, opened with the handicapped driving since 1960.
Rules
In this static alternative of the Fencing, the two athletes are installed face to face in a wheel chair which is fixed on the ground. The distance which separates them is determined by that which has the shortest arm.
The armchairs are fixed by forming an angle of 110° with the central boundary line. The candidates hold with a hand their weapon (foil, sword or saber), and other stud themselves with their armchair. During the meeting, they must remain sitted, and cannot make use of their legs. The armchairs should not be raised.
The athletes have equipment of standard fencing, more of additional protections for the legs. Those which lack catch on their weapon can fix it with a band or a similar device.
Each key brings back a point. The validity of a key depends on the weapon:
-
foil: the trunk, except for the head and of the arms. The key must be carried out with the point of the blade.
- sword: very part of the body above the hips. The key must be carried out with the point of the blade.
- saber: very part of the body above the hips. The key can be carried out with the point or the side of the blade.
In individual test , the gunners clash for 3 3 minutes periods, the first adding up 15 keys gaining the victory (or that having obtained the greatest number of keys). There exists one one minute additional period to decide between the adversaries in the event of equality. For the preliminary rounds, one is satisfied only one 4 minutes period with 5 keys to be victorious.
In collective test , the teams are made up of three players. The first to add up 45 keys is victorious.
Eligibility and categories
The athletes wishing to take part in the competitions must be confined in wheel chair, following a traumatism of the spinal column, with an amputation in lower part of the knees or with a cerebral driving infirmity, subject to other handicaps.
The selection committee observes them in order to then classify them in three categories corresponding to increasingly heavy handicaps:
- category a: with balance of the trunk.
- category b: without balance of the trunk.
- category C: tetraplegic.
The various paralympic tests are:
-
the foil men (categories has and B)
- the foil women (categories has and B)
- the sword men (categories has and B)
- the sword women (categories has and B)
- the saber men (categories has and B).
Contrary to TRUSTS (with its championships of the world), the International Olympic committee does not organize a competition of fencing for the handicapped people of category C.
Championships of the world of fencing in wheel chair
In 2006 the championships of the World take place in Turin from September 30th to October 7th.
