Fellering

Fellering is a common French, located in the department of the Haut-Rhin and the area Alsace. Its inhabitants is called Fellerinois.

Geography

The locality occupies a remarkable position of the valley of the the Thur, with the crossroads of two axes of circulation, the main thing being materialized by the main road 66 which connects Mulhouse to the Vosgean Southern , the secondary going up towards Oderen, Kruth and the Route of the Peaks.

History

The origin of the name comes from the German Feld (fields) and ingen (suffix indicating a foundation created by a clan) or umringt (surrounded of). A second thesis supported in particular by Mr. Robert HARTMANN, gives very an other explanation on the origin of the name. According to holding of this thesis, one should not stop on the most recent form, but on the contrary on the oldest form. The study of the names of the localities of the high valley of the Thur proves that many localities bear names of Celtic origin, Latin or of old French. One can quote like example, Schalm, Batschina, Vorgott, Treh (which one wrote Tréé until worms the years 1870). The current name of the village, Fallri or Fallery which remained through the centuries seems the best proof. This name derives straight of old French Faylan, resulting from Fay or Fahi old name for the beech. This name remains in many places of the Vosges and Territory of Belfort. Faylan then means the mountain with forests of beeches. The first mentions of the commune go back to 1357.
