Feldgendarmery
The Feldgendarmerie (term translated of the French Gendarmerie), was a unit of military Police German between the end of the Napoleonean wars and the end of the Second world war
History
.At the beginning of the hostilities, in 1914, the Feldgendarmerie counted thirty-three units; they were one hundred at the end of the war.
Second world war
The Feldgendarmerie (pejoratively named Kettenhunde or connected dogs because of the chain that they carried around the neck) had a big role until the end of the Second world war by tracking tens of thousands of known deserters under the name of Fahnenflüchtiger . According to the formula of Hitler which said that " the soldiers can die, but the deserters owe mourir" , of many deserters of the German army were carried out summarily.Towards the end of the war, whereas the popular support for actions other than defensive started to decrease, the Feldgendarmerie was called Heldenklau because of all the unpopular missions which fell on to him. These missions, in particular the research of the deserters among the refugees and the sending of the populations of the back towards the face, contribute to sully the image with the gendarmes of the Wehrmacht.
Moreover, certain units of Feldgendarmerie are in charge of the missions of occupation of the territories under control of the Wehrmacht.
This means control of the traffic to the missions of civil police force while passing by the continuation and the execution of the resistant and the isolated enemy soldiers.
When the units left an area, control was transferred to the units S. The participation of the Feldgendarmerie in the massacres and war crimes made by the forever officially proven S, even if, generally, the history of this unit during the second world war made the object of many publications and research.
Organization post-war period
With the creation of the Bundeswehr, many units were baptized names chosen to avoid any resemblance to their equivalents of the Wehrmacht. With regard to the military Police force within the Bundeswehr, this role is assumed by the Feldjäger (this name is that of old the Feldgendarmerie Prussia.
