Federation of the workers of Quebec

The Federation of the workers and workers of Quebec (name of use Federation of the workers of Quebec - Quebec Workers Federation), or FTQ , is the first Trade union Quebec by its number of members (more 500  000 members, mainly male, 44% of the trade unionists of the province). 60% of the members are employed in the private sector.

The FTQ was created in 1957 by the fusion of two very old organizations, the provincial Fédération of the work of Quebec ( Quebec Labor Provincial Federation) and the Fédération of the industrial unions of Quebec ( Quebec Industrial Unions Federation). It mainly developed under the presidency of Louis Laberge of 1964 with 1991, with the support of American trade unions which feared Délocalisation S towards the Canada.

The FTQ is the Regional office of Quebec of the Congrès of the work of Canada (CTC). The FTQ has an existence more autonomous than the other regional office. This situation is explained by the fact why the FTQ is souverainist.

The FTQ counts today nearly 40 North-American, Canadian trade unions and affiliated inhabitants of Quebec. It counts 17 basic district councils and 5.000 units (called room and being able to contain several units of accreditation in its center.)

The FTQ is also owner of the deep sea of workers of Quebec, the Solidarity funds FTQ having credits of 7,2 billion $.

The FTQ is classified like reformist. Its current president is Michel Arsenault and his general secretary Rene Roy. Its former president Clément Godbout became president de Institut of chrysotile. He now represents the owners of the industry of asbestos, which is ironic given that the strikes in this sector strongly marked the history of the trade unionism in Quebec.
