Federation of the Western Indies
The Fédération of the Western Indies (or Federation of the Western Antilles ) was a transitory formed federation of British colonies of the the Antilles. The federation was created the January 3rd 1958, and dissolved the May 31st 1962.
By this federation, the United Kingdom wanted to create a new political entity in order to grant the independence of its West-Indian possessions in the form of only one state. Nevertheless, the internal political quarrels with the federation led to its failure.
Territories composing the federation
The States or territories according to then composed the provinces of the federation:
- Barbados
- Dominique
- Grenade
- Jamaica on which the Cayman Islands depended and the Turkish islands and Caïques
- Montserrat
- Saint-Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla (separate later in Saint-Christophe-and-Niévès and Anguilla)
- Saint-Vincent-and-the-Grenadian St Lucia
- Trinity-and-Tobago
History
The dissolution of the federation will be precipitated by the referendum on the independence of September 1961 in Jamaica. Thereafter, on January 14th, 1962, the Parliament of Trinity-and-Tobago adopts a law rejecting a federation without Jamaica. Deprived of its two principal territories, the federation is dissolved the May 31st 1962.
