Federation of Mali

The Fédération of Mali gathered the Senegal and the French Sudan (current Mali) between 1959 and 1960.

History

Into 1958, the debate on the federalism divides the African political community. The federalists Léopold Sédar Senghor and Modibo Keïta will be the craftsmen of the Federation of Mali, gathering the French colonies of Senegal, of the French Sudan, the the Upper Volta (future Burkina Faso) and of the Dahomey (future Benign). The federation is created in January 1959, but as of March, Dahomey and the Upper Volta withdraw themselves. Modibo Keïta takes the chair of the government and Léopold Sédar Senghor that of the federal assembly. In May 1959, De Gaulle receives Modibo Keita and recognizes the independence of the Federation of Mali, which will be proclaimed the June 20th 1960. During the summer, the dissensions between Senegalese and Sudaneses on their political designs involve the bursting of the Federation of Mali. The August 20th 1960, the Senegal proclaims its independence. The September 22nd, Modibo Keïta proclaims the independence of French Sudan which becomes the République of Mali.
