Federal university of Rio de Janeiro
The federal University of Rio de Janeiro ( UFRJ ), also called " University of Brazil " , is largest federal Université of the Brésil. It is located mainly in the town of Rio de Janeiro where it has two Campus (Ilha C Fundão and Praia Vermelha) as well as units isolated like the Faculty of Law, the Institut of Philosophy and Social sciences and the Music school.
In addition to the centers devoted to the teaching of first ( Undergraduate ) and second cycles ( Postgraduate ), the University has entities like the National museum of Brazil (also known under the name of Musée Quinta da Boa Vista ), located in the district Carioca of São Cristóvão, the Observatoire of Valongo like eight university hospitals: University hospital Clementino Fraga Filho, Hospital-School Saint-François-with Base, Institute of Gynecology, Institute of Neurology Deolindo Couto, Institute of Psychiatry, Institute of Child welfare and Pediatry Martagão Gesteira, Institute of Diseases of the Thorax and finally the Maternity-School, without counting other units dispersed in the city. In the Center-ville of Rio de Janeiro currently in construction two buildings of 41 floors are each one, of which a part will be yielded to the University.
The federal University of Rio de Janeiro falls under the line line of the first times of the Higher education to the Brésil: for example, the Medical college was created in 1808 by Jean VI of Portugal, with the name of Académie of Medicine and Chirurgie , while the Polytechnic school was founded in 1792, under the reign of Marie Ire of Portugal, although the military teaching of Engineering was instituted as of 1699 by a royal decree of Pierre II of Portugal.
Born from the union of several Faculty S already existing, the UFRJ was officially created the September 7th 1920 by the Brazilian president Epitácio Pessoa, and accepted the name of University of Rio de Janeiro. Later, in 1937, it was renamed Université of Brazil: certain historians affirm that this title holds its origin owing to the fact that a foreign monarch had required to receive the title of Doctor of the national university, as it had the practice of it. As there was not d'" University of Brésil" , the name change took place. In 1965, the Decree n°: 4759 of the military government of the general Humberto de Alencar Castello Branco imposed on the Brazilian universities a standardized nomenclature, and the University of Rio de Janeiro accepted its current name then.
In the year 2000, the University initiated an legal action in order to ask for the right of be called again " University of Brésil" , while pleading that this name was withdrawn to him by a Décret disputed emitted during the military Dictature Brazilian. The request was accepted and it is acutellement possible to use the two names to indicate the University.
Among the strong points of the UFRJ the Recherche appears: : 3703 pupils took part in the Day of Initiation Scientific, Artistique and Cultural, which takes place each year. The Publisher of the University publishes on average 18 Livre S per annum. Many companies mantiennent research centres in the Campus of Ilha C Fundão, as the Research and Improvement Center on the Oil (CENPES) of the Brazilian oil company Petrobrás.

Largest Campus of the University is located on the island of Fundão (Ilha C Fundão), in the Northern Zone of Rio de Janeiro, which it almost entirely occupies. This artificial island was created in the Années 1950 by the junction of several natural islands by means of excavation work. However, the activities of the campus started only in 1970: the military regime found in the island a means of containing more easily a possible rebellion coed, since at the beginning the access to the island was ensured by two Pont S narrow only. The preliminary draft provided that all the courses were transferred there, and this idea was taken up recently with the re-election of the president of university Aloísio Teixeira.
The buildings of the campus of Ilha C Fundão were built by large Architecte S modernistic Brazilian. Certain projects accepted several prices of Architecture. The principal buildings are connected to the various Centers:
- Center of Technology
- Center of Mathematical Sciences and Nature (in this building also various institutes are, like that of Géographie)
- Bâtiment of the Presidency, where are also the courses of Architecture and Urbanisme
- Center of Lettres
- University hospital
- Center of Sciences of Health
- Institut of Puériculture and Pédiatrie Martagão Gesteira (IPPMG)

- Residence hall.
Recently, the access to the campus of Ilha C Fundão was improved, after the construction of the highway axes Linha Vermelha and Linha Amarela and the installation of a connection per bus with the Metro at the station Del Castilho. However, the proximity of the Complexo da Maré (greatest agglomeration of Favela S of the city) causes concerns as for the safety of the buildings, and in 2006 the campus obtained shift and safety fences with monitoring which are closed after a certain hour.
