The federal Polytechnic school of Zurich (in German Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zurich , ETHZ) is a technical university located at Zurich, Suisse. Its shortened French name is EPFZ. It is sometimes called “ETH” or “Poly” according to its original name.

The ETHZ is regarded by certain as one of the universities leader in Europe in the field of the Chimie, the Physique and the Informatique. It is also famous in the Germanic world for its elevated level.

History

The ETHZ was founded in 1854 by the Swiss Confederation, and opened its doors in 1855 under the name of Polytechnic Institut (Eidgenössische Polytechnische Schule). It included/understood in the beginning six departments: structure, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, sylviculture, as well as a generic department which included/understood mathematics, the natural science, the literature, and social sciences and policies.

With a new law in 1991 which became effective in 1993, the associated ETHZ, FPSL and 4 research institutes were gathered within the Domaine of the federal Polytechnic schools which is managed by the council of the polytechnic schools.

They are new and very vast buildings. A system of bus (free for the pupils and the professors) connects the two campuses.
