The Federal Polytechnic school of Lausanne (FPSL) is one of largest the polytechnic school of Europe, and the second of Suisse.
History
The school was founded in 1853 at the instigation of Louis Rivier, Jean Gay, Pierre-Joseph and Jules Marguet, as a private school, under the name of special École of Lausanne, inspired by the central École Paris. It became the technical department of the public Academy of Lausanne in 1869. When the latter was reorganized and acquired the statute of university in 1890, technical faculty changed its name into École of engineers of the University of Lausanne . In 1946, it was renamed Polytechnic school of the University of Lausanne (EPUL) .
In 1969, the EPUL was separated from the remainder of the Université of Lausanne, and became a federal institution under its current name, joining the federal Polytechnic school of Zurich.
To date (2006) the school is one of the six autonomous public corporations which form the Domaine of the federal Polytechnic schools and thus depends, contrary to the other high university schools of Switzerland which are generally managed by the cantons, of the Federal state.
The school
FPSL counts approximately 10000 people on the campus, including approximately 6500 students, their professors, of the scientific and technical collaborators, and even contractors of the Scientific Park of FPSL. One counts more than 100 nationalities, and more than 50% of the teaching body is foreign.The school includes/understands six faculties:
- ENAC: Natural environment, architectural and built (architecture, civil engineering, sciences and engineering of the environment)
- I& C: Data processing and communications
- SB: Basic sciences (physics, chemistry, mathematics)
- SV: Life sciences
- STI: Sciences and technology of the engineer (electricity, mechanics, materials, microtechnic)
- CdH: College of humanities
- CDM: College of the management of technology
The school also encourages community life and sporting on the campus. Thanks to more than 70 associations of any going type of the representation of the students like l´ AGEPoly with the organization of festivals or festivals like Balélec does it, the students can in addition to their studies acquiring experiments which form more for their professional life and social.
Site
The school was located since 1943 at the avenue of Court, n° 29-33, with Lausanne, in the old Savoy Hotel. In 1971 began the construction of the new buildings on the site of Dorigny, with Ecublens, the Université of Lausanne installed since October 1970. The inauguration of the first buildings of FPSL with Dorigny took place in 1978.The site is since in constant evolution, and from many constructions came to be grafted on the campus. The last project in date is the Learning Center , construction of the Japanese office SANAA.

With the classification of Newsweek Signal 100 Total Universities', FPSL is with the 26e row of the universities in the world.With the classification of The Times Higher Education Supplement 2006, FPSL is with the 64e world rank (34e in 2005), with the 16th European rank and the 10th rank of the European technical universities.
With the academic Classification of the world universities by the university Jiao Tong of Shanghai of 2007, FPSL is classified 3rd European technical universities.
FPSL is in possession since summer 2005 of a supercomputer Blue Gene builds by IBM. The machine is most powerful of Switzerland and is placed at the 22e world rank (November 2006) with its theoretical speed of 22,8 teraflops.

- FPSL is the official scientific adviser of the team Alinghi, double winner of the Cut America 2003 and 2007.
- In order to better include/understand the relation between the nutrition and the brain, FPSL and the Research center Nestlé signed a one five years duration agreement. According to the terms of this one, Nestlé will contribute to height of 5 million per year and for five years, with work of the Brain Mind Institute , where 2 pulpits were create.
- Logitech and FPSL announced the creation of the incubating Logitech FPSL. Each year this collaboration will offer a financial support, teaching and functional with a selection of researchers and students.

- Breitling To orbit 3, the first balloon to have made a round the world tour without stopover in 1999, controlled by Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones.

Associations
AGEPoly
AGEPoly is the General association of the Students of FPSL and was founded in 1951 under the name of AGEPUL (General association of the Students of the University Polytechnic school of Lausanne). Since 1964, it bears its current name.
AGEPoly consists of a Steering committee, composed of 4 to 8 students elected at the time of the General meeting, and of three poles, which are as many missions: services with the students, the animation of the campus and the representation of the students.
Moreover, AGEPoly has a score of commissions, whose Coaching, Xchange, Challenge, PolyBeach or Grand Prix Retro, and are member founder of the Association of the Students of the High Swiss Schools (AES).
A3-EPFL
A3-EPFL (in the past for Friendly Association of the Former students of the Federal Polytechnic school of Lausanne) is the associative organization of the graduates (graduate, masters, doctors, graduates of a cycle postgrade) of FPSL. It aims to develop the network of the graduates, to represent them at FPSL, and to seek to support the contacts between them and the school.
It offers:
- un subscription with a3 newspapers and the magazine Reflex camera , Co-published by FPSL;
- le sponsorship of the graduates by a alumni;
- une addresses e-mail to life;
- la held of the single electronic file gathering all the graduates;
- des loan on trust for a postformation;
- l' organization of the Alumni evening and many other visits and conference;
- la publication of the directory gathering the coordinates of more than 7 ' 000 graduates of FPSL in more than 100 countries;
- une purse with employment;
- l' maintenance and the development of regional sections and in foreign countries.
The regional sections (Geneva, Vaud-Were worth, Eastern Suisse and BE-NE-FR-JU) organize many demonstrations (technical or cultural visits, friendly conferences, business-buffet, aperitifs, meals…). At the time of these demonstrations, the members create new friendly relations and professional.
Forum FPSL
Forum FPSL is the association of students of FPSL charged to organize Forum FPSL. It is made up of approximately 14 people. Founded in 1982, the Forum was always a privileged place of exchanges and meetings between the university and professional communities. Its mission is to support the recruitment and the professional insertion of the graduates. Today Forum FPSL is the most important event of recruitment in Switzerland and one of largest of Europe.
UniPoly
UniPoly is the association of the students of FPSL and the Université of Lausanne for the Sustainable development. Strong of more than 50 students, it is active in sensitizing with sustainable development in all the French-speaking Switzerland .Since 2005, it diffuses its Durable Astuces , of the free folders on 11 sets of themes (water, transport, food, waste, equitable trade, drugs and cosmetics, electricals appliance, maintenance products, electric household appliances, heating and electricity, purchases) which propose simple gestures of the daily newspaper to consume in a durable way.
UniPoly belongs to the World Student Community for Sustainable Development , a global area network of associations of students for sustainable development including/understanding the Polytechnic school of Zurich, the Massachusetts Institute off Technology, the University of Tokyo, University of Regina, the Chalmers University, the University of St-Pétersburg and the University of Yaounde.
