Federal minister of the Family (Germany)

The federal minister of the Family, the Elderly, the Women and Youth ( of Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend , BMFSFJ) is the Ministère German Federal government in charge of the family questions, equality between the men and the women and of the civil service.

It is directed since since November 22nd, 2005 by the Christian Democrat Ursula von der Leyen.

Mission

The ministry is charged:

  • of the family policy ;
  • of the policy bound for the elderly;
  • of the policy as regards women's right;
  • of the policy bound for the childhood and of the Youth;
  • of the civil service;
  • of voluntariate and caritative social security.

Organization

The ministry is a supreme federal administration. The federal budget allots to the ministry 5,250 billion Euro S for 2007.

It is organized in five sections:

  • section 1: Center section;
  • section 2: Family, charitable action, voluntariate;
  • section 3: Elderly;
  • section 4: Equal opportunity;
  • section 5: Childhood and youth.

The federal minister is assisted of a parliamentary Secretary of State and of a Secretary of State. The federal delegate at the Civil service ( Bundesbeauftragter für den Zivildienst ) is attached near the minister.

The principal seat of the ministry is with Berlin; it also has a secondary seat with Bonn, which counts more employees.

History

The federal minister of the family Questions ( Bundesministerium für Familienfragen ) is created in 1953.

In 1969, it is amalgamated with the federal minister of Health to create the federal minister of Youth, the Women and Health ( of Bundesministerium für Jugend, Familie und Gesundheit ).

In 1991, this ministry is divided. Health becomes again an independent wallet, and other competences are joined together in two ministries: the federal minister of the Women and Youth ( of Bundesministerium für Frauen und Jugend ) and the federal minister of the Family and the Elderly ( of Bundesministerium für Familie und Senioren ).

In 1994, these two ministries are joined together to give the current ministry.
