Federal District of the North-West
The federal district of the North-West is one of the seven federal districts of Russia. It constitutes the northern part of European Russia . Its capital is Saint-Pétersbourg.
Characteristics
The federal district of the North-West counts approximately 13.986.000 inhabitants (10% of the population of Russia) and extends on 1.854.700 km ² (either 10% of the territory of the Federation).
Subdivisions
The federal district of the North-West east made up of the federal prone following (the capital of each subject is located between brackets):- Republic of Karelia (Petrozavodsk)
- Oblast de Kaliningrad (Kaliningrad)
- Republic of Komis (Syktyvkar)
- Oblast of Leningrad (Saint-Pétersbourg)
- Oblast de Mourmansk (Mourmansk)
- autonomous District of Nenets (Naryan-Mar)
- Oblast de Novgorod (Velikiy Novgorod)
- Oblast de Pskov (Pskov)
- Saint-Pétersbourg (Saint-Pétersbourg)
- Oblast de Vologda (Vologda)
Seven of these subjects are oblasts, but the district also includes/understands a federal city (Saint-Pétersbourg) and two republics (Karelia and the republic of Komis).
The autonomous district of Nenets is a subdivision of the oblast of Arkhangelsk, but has nevertheless the statute of federal subject.
The oblast of Kaliningrad is completely detached from the remainder of Russia: it is located on banks of the the Baltic, between the Poland with the South and the Lithuania in North.
