Faye-the-Vinous

Faye-the-Vinous is a common French of the department of Indre-et-Loire, in the area Center.

Its inhabitants is called the Fagiens, Fagiennes .

Geography

Faye-the-vinous, is located at 12 km of Richelieu. It is built on a hill of 110 m altitude dominating the neighborhoods. Faye is crossed by the brook of Auzon.

History

Faye-the-vinous, has today unfortunately only few inhabitants, but was formerly the most populated commune of all the canton, and counted several thousands of citizens during the Moyen-âge. Its name would come from Latin “Fagus” (Hêtre) which gave “Fagia” , then “Faye” . The city was the center of a stronghold which corresponded about to the current canton. The fact that the commune is built on a hill, was determining in the role of defense. The commune of Sling-under-Faye in door still the trace in its name.

At the 11th century, Foulques Nerra made build a castle-extremely and strengthened the borough. The ramparts were bored of four monumental doors, each one having a drawbridge. In 1064, Raoul de Châtellerault will be affaira with the rise of the city, by building three churches as well as a crypt. The population of the borough as of the surrounding strongholds is estimated at approximately 10.000 inhabitants. In 1593 almost all constructions were destroyed by the risks of the wars of religion thus announcing the decline of the medieval city. In 1626 Richelieu repurchased the city.

In 1790 - 1794, Faye-the-Vinous annexed the common Saint-Jouin-the-Faye, and in 1795 - 1800 it annexed Marnay.

Places and monuments

The principal monument of the commune of Faye, is collegial the Saint-Georges, who was a very important religious building at the time medieval. The collegial one was attached to the castle now destroyed. The unit is of Romance style . Seen sky, the church of collegial with the shape of a cross turned towards Jerusalem (i.e. towards the south-south-east). It has a Nef and a rather remarkable chorus and preserved very well. It also has a Crypte, the element oldest of the unit. One says this crypt that it formerly contained several Relique S of which one which was not other than the tooth of holy Georges. According to the history, the tooth was taken by the Protesting S lasting the wars of religion. The crypt was also devoted to the the Holy Sepulchre and Sainte Marie-madeleine. The church of collegial the Saint-Georges is the only remaining church of the commune on the four which still existed at the 18th century.
