Fathers Marists

----

To reach the article on the Marist brothers of the Schools founded by Holy Marcellin Champagnat. ----

The order of the Marists , (or " Company of Marie " ) is an religious order with simple wishes, of pontifical right, founded, in 1822, by the Vénérable Jean-Claude-Marie Colin and officially approved by Gregoire XVI in 1836.

According to its founder, the object of the order, trained auxiliary priests and brothers, is of " to increase the glory of God, and the honor of his/her Very Holy Mother " , and also, to propagate the Roman Church, by multiple forms of apostolate: retirements, education of the children by creating secondary colleges, the most remote missions, in particular in Oceania (where into 1854 they were already 117), poor parishes…

In 1824, it founded the congregation of Marist sisters, teachers, missionaries, hospital as well as a third order in 1850.

One should not confuse the order of the Maristes , with that of the Marianistes rested by the Father Chaminade and of the Marist brothers of the Schools founded by Saint Marcellin Champagnat. One will however note, that the Vénérable Jean-Claude-Marie Colin, Saint Marcellin Champagnat, and Saint Jean-Marie Vianney, (the priest of Ars), were all three with the Grand Seminar of Lyon, and ordered priests the same year, in 1816.
