Farnham is a city of the Quebec, located in the regional Municipalité of county of Brominates-Missisquoi, in the administrative area of the Montérégie.

Geography

Located on the banks of the river Yamaska, in extreme cases of the Low-Grounds of the St. Lawrence, the town of Farnham is near regional centres such as Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in the west and Granby in the North-East.

History

The town of Farnham draws its name from the Canton of Farnham. This last was one of the rare cantons proclaimed before 1800 and it was named thus in recall of the town of Farnham, in England. First Farnhamiens, partly Loyal supporters, settled there since 1800.

The December 28th 1876, Farnham obtained the statute of city. The March 8th 2000, the town of Farnham and the municipality of Rainville amalgamate to form only one city. Following this fusion, the population of the town of Farnham amounts now with 7.955 inhabitants.

Railway industry

Farnham has a considerable station compared with its population. However, today, the station acceuille only of the goods, in particular of the coaches coming from the Canadian west. There is no train for the transport of people. In the past, the station acceuillait railway travellers.

Military base

The Canadian Armed forces have there a center of drive located close to Holy-Brigide-with Iberville. This center is a minibase which makes it possible to carry out drive of countryside and drive with the shooting. In the year 1960 There was a project to make an international airport on the site of the base, the given up fu project and one chose Mirabel what gave rise to the International airport Montreal-Mirabel

Farnham has a public library founded in 1958 by a group of voluntary. It is one of rare besides to be still managed like a corporation with nonlucrative goal and not like a municipal service. It is also the basic place of the School of parachuting Nouvel Air. The city is equipped with an arena, named in the honor of the adviser Madeleine Auclair. Since end of the year 90, the city is equipped with a park with board with casters (SkatePark) and there organizes at every year in August a festival named " SkateFest". High-place of football, the teams of the secondary school Jean-Jacques-Bertrand have a notorious historical card on the provincial level. At the year 2004, the senior team of hockey the " Desjardins" the day saw. The west of the city, a golf course allows the practice of this sport. Farnham is in the center of the cycle network the “Montérégiades” and of the “Green Road”.
